Jay Co. girls place fifth at Blackford Invitational (09/13/04)

HARTFORD CITY — Jay County’s girls cross country team placed fifth at the Blackford Invitational Saturday, scoring 166 points.

Carroll was first in the 14-team field with 33 points, and Andrean was second with 82 points.

The Patriot boys were 19th in a 20-team field with a score of 514. Pendleton height placed first with 55 points, and Northridge was second with 66.

Alyssa Johnson had the top finish for the girls team, which was seventh in last year’s 15-team event. She was 11th overall in a time of 15-minutes, 59 seconds.

Jay County’s two freshmen were next in line with Amanda Johnson 22nd in 16:39 and Amber Detro 34th in 17:09. Jill Roughia was 44th in 17:21, with Jessica Mosier 55th in 17:45.

Also running were Lindsey Vesperry (66th in 18:30) and Kelli Whitenack (78th in 19:41).

Ian Thomas was the lone Patriot boy in the top 99 as he took 85th in 18:56. Cory Mock was 100th in 19:32, and Mitchel Thomas finished in 105th in 19:48.

Edwin Clott placed 109th in 19:58, and Doug Murray was 115th in 20:22. Also running for the Patriots were Josh Atkinson (118th in 20:30) and Josh Selvey (122nd in 20:49).

Jay County will run in the Union City Invitational Saturday at 10 a.m.

Spikers go 1-3

NOBLESVILLE — The Jay County volleyball team finished 1-3 at the Noblesville Invitational Saturday to drop to 5-12 on the season.

The Patriots’ lone victory came by a 25-20, 23-25, 25-22 count against Whiteland. They lost in three games to Frankfort, 25-9, 22-25, 25-10, and were swept by Class 2A No. 4 Union County 28-26, 25-14 and Plainfield 25-15, 25-20.

Kelly Sautbine racked up twice as many points as anyone else on the team, scoring 30 points, including 11 aces. She also had 27 digs.

Jamie Walker finished with 28 digs and 13 kills. Ashley Overla had 21 kills, and Shannon O’Dell added 16.

Janae Roush had 42 digs, Erin St. Myers had 31 digs and Leah Gasparovic saw her first action at setter as she finished with 63 assists.

Jay County’s next match is at Class 3A No. 6 Blackford Thursday at 6 p.m.

EJ 2nd, WJ third

DUNKIRK — West Jay hosted its volleyball invitational Saturday, placing second in both the eighth grade and seventh grade competitions. East Jay was second in both, with Wes-Del finishing first and South Adams fourth.

East Jay’s eighth grade team defeated West Jay 22-20, 21-9 and South Adams 20-22, 21-5, 15-11 to place second. It lost to Wes-Del 25-23, 25-16.

Brittany Mann racked up 10 kills to lead the Chiefs. She also scored seven points.

Cori Vormohr had a team-best 14 points, including five aces, and eight assists. Kaelee Keller racked up 12 points, and Mackenzie Loy had four kills.

Eagles split

DUNKIRK — The West Jay football team split its games against Northfield Saturday. The eighth grade team won 34-8, while the seventh grade team took a 16-6 defeat.

Alan Brown scored three touchdowns for the eighth grade team on runs of 44, 12 and two yards. Andrew Lancaster had the other two touchdowns, one on an 18-yard run and the other on a seven-yard run.

John Hawn ran in one two-point conversion, and passed to Blake Price for another.

Michael Daniels had the only touchdown for the seventh grade team on a 5-yard run in the third quarter.[[In-content Ad]]
