Jay Co. goes 2-3 at Cathedral duals (01/19/04)

In its final meet before the run of postseason tournaments the Jay County wrestling team went 2-3 at Saturday’s Indianapolis Cathedral Super Duals.

The Patriots picked up wins over Connersville and Indianapolis Arlington, but lost to the host Fighting Irish, New Castle and Kentucky St. Xavier.

Cathedral won the invitational championship.

A pair of Jay County competitors were perfect on the day.

Tyler Bash (HVY) improved to 27-4 on the year with a 5-0 mark.

Kurtis Hess went 4-0 at 130 pounds to boost his season record to 24-4.

Josh Thornburg (112) Derek Bogenschutz (125) and Bill Spahr (152) were all 3-2 on the day, and Trent Bash (140) finished with a 2-2 mark.

The Patriots will compete in the Olympic Athletic Conference meet at Anderson Highland Saturday at 9 a.m. The sectional meet will follow a week later at Jay County.

Chiefs roll

The East Jay wrestling team defeated Muncie North recently 66-18.

Picking up victories for East Jay were Cameron Pfiefer (80), Josh Lochtefeld (85), Casey Kenney (90), Mason Murphy (95), James Abbott (105) and Aaron Miller (110). Also adding wins for the Chiefs (2-0) were David Jones (115), Aaron Brenner (135), Lucas Schmiesing (145), Caleb Hemmelgarn (160) and Mitch Martyne (225).

Jay 2nd at Marion

The Jay County Winter Swim Team had another nice outing Saturday as it finished second at the Marion Blizzard Splash with 1,312 points. Oak Hill won the meet with 2,067 points, and host Marion was third with 1,253.

Four Jay County swimmers were high-point winners in their division, with Cori Vormohr and Alex Habegger each finishing the day undefeated.

Vormohr set yet another new team record, winning the 13-and-older girls 200-yard freestyle in 2:08.53. She was also first in the 100-yard breaststroke, the 200-yard individual medley, the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly.

Habegger dominated the 11-12-year-olds boys division. His wins came in the 50-yard backstroke, the 50-yard breaststroke, the 50-yard butterfly, the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle.

Justin Klopp took top honors in the 13-and-older boys division with three wins and two second-place efforts. He was first in the 50- and 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly.

Sok Vormohr carried the 6-and-younger boys division with a pair of victories as he won the 25-yard backstroke and the 25-yard freestyle.

Lydia Beymer, Sophie Bader, Caitlin Mark and Annie Vormohr teamed to add a relay win the 8-and-younger girls 100-yard freestyle relay.[[In-content Ad]]
