Jay Co. heads to regional Friday

The Patriots will have their work cut out of them when they head back to The Players Club.
The Jay County High School boys golf team will make their third trip to the Yorktown course on Friday, when they play in the regional tournament.
The Patriots enter as the tenth seed out of 12 teams after posting a 337 to place third at the Monroe Central sectional. Westfield is the favorite after winning the Noblesville sectional with a 295, with No. 13 Carmel (298) and No. 14 Noblesville (302) close behind.
Each of the top 14 players at the regional shot 75 or better in sectional play.
The top three teams and top three individuals not on an advancing team will move on to the state finals.
In its two previous trips to TPC, the Patriots posted scores of 391 and 375. Sophomore Evan Mathias had their best individual score with an 82.

Rockets fall
CELINA, Ohio — The Portland Rockets suffered their first losses of the season Wednesday, falling 4-3 and 5-1 to the host Grand Lake Mariners.
The Rockets were in position to win both games, with South Adams High School graduate Daniel Bollenbacher (five strikeouts) tossing four scoreless frames in game two before leaving in the fifth inning with a 1-0 lead. But Grand Lake came up with a three run double in the fifth and added two more runs in the sixth to earn the win.
Justin Marrero had a hit and scored the lone Portland run.

The opening game was tied at two in the final frame, but a two-run double followed by an infield, RBI single lifted the Mariners. Marrero had two hits and two RBIs, and Bryan Brudi added two hits in the defeat.

Suman leads Blue
REDKEY — A perfect effort at the plate from Mikele Suman led Blue to a 10-0 win over Green Tuesday in Redkey Junior League Minor softball.
Suman went 4-for-4 with three runs, and Allison Jobe added three hits and a run in the Blue win. Emalyn Hartzell went 3-for-4 with three runs as Green topped Red 10-9.
In Major softball, Kierston Rabon had two hits and two runs to lead Green, and Kaylee Denney finished with two hits and one run for Orange.
In Major baseball Monday, Cole Stigleman hit a walk-off grand slam to lift the Pirates, and Mitchell Ferguson finished with two hits and a run for the Reds. Cody Lennington had three hits and three runs for the Mets in Minor softball, and Tavin Wasson finished with a double, a triple and a home run for the Red Sox.

Smith smacks HR
Sean Smith hit a home run Wednesday in All Circuit Electric’s 13-8 victory over Williams Auto Parts in Portland Junior League Rookie baseball.
Smith’s inside-the-park homer came in the third inning as All Circuit earned its first win of the year. Mickey Waters added two hits, four RBIs and a run.
Mitchel Trobridge had two hits and two RBIs for Williams.
A.J. Myers had three hits, three runs and two RBIs as Ponderosa topped Barnett’s Auto Parts 11-6. Allen Dues singled, drove in four runs and scored once.
