Jay Co. holds off Bears (09/12/03)

Senior setter Sarah Ainsworth had a big day for the Jay County volleyball team in a 21-18, 21-8, 19-21, 21-14 victory over the Monroe Central Golden Bears Thursday.

Ainsworth was third on the team in service points, but scored five of her eight points on aces. She also led the team with 14 digs and 20 assists.

Sara Hough had a team-high nine kills for the Patriots (5-7). She added 10 points, including four on aces.

Ashley Overla had six kills and three blocks, Erin St. Myers added 13 digs and Kelly Sautbine scored 11 points.

Jay County’s next action will be at the Tippecanoe Valley Tournament Saturday at 10 a.m.

Starfires slip to 3-7

The South Adams volleyball team dropped to 0-3 in the Allen County Athletic Conference and 3-7 overall with a 21-10, 17-21, 21-15, 21-7 loss to the Bellmont Braves Thursday.

Lee Ann Snyder and Robyn Habegger each had eight kills in the contest. Snyder added a pair of blocks.

Alyssa Miller notched 22 assists to go along with 13 digs and one ace. Kelly Mertz had 12 digs, and Brooke Fox matched Snyder with two blocks.

The Starfires lost a tight junior varsity match 22-20, 13-21, 21-13, and also fell in freshman action 21-8, 21-9.

South Adams begins a stretch of five straight home matches Monday against Parkway at 6 p.m.

Delta tops JC golfers

Jay County’s girls golf team put together a team-best score for the season Thursday, but still suffered a 180-226 defeat against Delta.

The Patriots’ 226 was 70 strokes better than the score they shot at the first meet this season.

Senior Cara Geesaman powered the team with her 53. She had the only two pars on the day for Jay County, playing even on the par-3 second hole and the par-5 fifth.

Geesaman also added bogeys on the sixth and eighth holes on the way to her team-low score.

Angie Stults followed with a 55, marking the second straight day she notched a personal best. She had bogeys on the first two holes as she surpassed the 56 she scored at home Wednesday against Muncie Southside.

Deanna Drinkut and Shonda Sutton followed with matching 59s, and Brianne Morrical shot a 61.

The Patriots will do battle in the Olympic Athletic Conference meet Monday hosted by Muncie Southside.

JC netters fall at Bluffton

The Jay County boys tennis team lost two matches in three sets, and had chances in its other two defeats in a 4-1 loss to the Bluffton Tigers Thursday.

No. 2 singles player Kentaro Ohgo improved to 2-0 with the Patriots’ lone win of the night, a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Alex Pfiester.

Kurtis Hess lost at No. 1 singles to Jared Granienard 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in the first of two three-set defeats for Jay County (4-6). Randy Evans and Tyler Rigby fell to Jason Castilon and Zach Anderson in the other, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.

The Patriots’ pair of two-set losses were also tight in the first set, with Derek Powell dropping a tiebreaker as he fell to Randy Gerber 7-6 (7-3), 6-2. Chip Feazell and Adam Paxson were also close early with Clint Cochran and Logan Aschliman in a 7-5, 6-3 loss.

Jay County’s junior varsity team (7-3) suffered its second straight defeat with a 4-1 loss to the Tigers.

Wil Goodrich again had the only win for the Patriots, topping Jason Adams 8-5 at No. 1 singles. Matthew Peterson fell to Adrian Larden 8-1 at No. 2 singles, and Jason Crouch lost to Adam Neuenschwander by the same score.

In doubles action Jeff Sims and Travis Smith fell to Patrick Reinard and Nick Brinneman 8-2 at the No. 1 spot, and Brady Michael and Todd McCowan lost 8-6 against Trent Scott and Jason Adams.

Jay County returns home Monday to take on Blackford at 4:30 p.m.

EJ runners place 3rd

East Jay’s girls cross country team placed third at the Bellmont Conditioner Thursday, with the varsity boys team and the reserve boys team both in fifth.

Amanda Johnson and Amber Detro teamed to place third in the girls division. Edwin Clott and Cody Sutton were seventh for the varsity boys, and Ryan Sutton and Colt Martin took 10th for the reserve boys.

WJ loses to West Side

The West Jay eighth grade volleyball team lost to West Side 21-12, 15-21, 21-11 Thursday, and the seventh grade team took a 21-18, 15-21, 21-15 defeat.

Jess Murdock paced the eighth grade with eight points, and Lauren Spahr and Emily Taylor each had three. Carrie VanSkyock scored 10 points for the seventh grade team, and Chelsea Grady had seven.

Chiefs split with NC

East Jay’s eighth grade football team took a 30-18 loss against New Castle Thursday, but the seventh grade team scored a 16-6 victory.

Dexter Shreve ran in a score 20 yards out for the seventh grade, and Billy Wellman took in the 2-point conversion. Wellman then scored on a 12-yard run in the second quarter, and Lance Franklin ran in the extra point.

Colton Lombardo and Vincente Vasquez each scored touchdowns at the Jamboree Monday. Lance Franklin and Trey Dunn had 2-point conversion runs.

Sam Lyons scored a pair of touchdowns for the eighth grade team, and Aaron Daniels hit Clint Muhlenkamp with an 80-yard touchdown pass.[[In-content Ad]]
