Jay Co. holds off Rebels (04/26/05)

MUNCIE — Trisha Champ’s near grand slam sparked a six-run second inning as the Jay County softball team managed to hold off the Muncie Southside Rebels Monday, 10-9.

The Patriots (3-7) trailed 2-0 after the opening frame, but took the lead for good in the second. With the bases loaded Champ narrowly missed a grand slam as her triple bounced off the top of the fence and landed in the field of play.

The freshman instead settled for a three-run triple in the six-run inning en route to four RBIs in all.

Jay County added two runs in the third inning and two in the sixth to lead 10-5. Southside got within one by scoring four times in the bottom of the sixth, but could not complete the rally.

Champ finished 2-for-4 in the contest, scoring a pair of runs and adding a stolen base. Saffron Redwine was 2-for-3 with two runs, Erica Clark doubled and scored twice and Erica Murray also scored two runs.

Brittany Logue got the win as she went the distance.

Tennis wins 3rd straight

PORTLAND — The No. 2s and No. 3 came through for the Patriots Monday as the Jay County girls tennis team knocked off the South Adams Starfires 3-2.

Erin St. Myers won her fourth straight match at No. 2 singles, defeating Renee Rybolt 6-3, 6-2. The Patriots (4-3) have won three in a row as a team, and are above .500 for the first time since winning the season opener at Blackford.

No. 3 singles player Julie Sours earned her third straight win, topping Belinda Rigby 6-2, 6-2. The other Jay County victory came at No. 2 singles, where Stephanie Homan and Carissa Wilkins defeated Whitney Liechty and Jessie Liechty 6-2, 6-4.

In other matches the Starfires’ Alyssa Miller downed Whitney Schemenaur 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, and Stacey Pyle and Erica Steiner of South Adams edged Brianne Morrical and Chelsea Reff 6-4, 7-6 (8-6).

Golfers top two

PORTLAND — Jay County’s golf team doubled its season win total Monday, topping the Monroe Central Golden Bears and the Winchester Golden Falcons to improve to 4-1.

The Patriots won the match by shooting a 159, 10 strokes better than Monroe Central. Winchester was a distant third with a 188.

Adam Foster came through with the top score for Jay County, shooting a 38. Alex Hunt was one back in second with a 39, and Tyler Johnston finished with a 40.

Nathan McClung rounded out the team score with a 42, and Ben Freeman shot a 43.

JV baseball wins

MUNCIE — A five-run fourth inning carried the Jay County junior varsity baseball team to an 8-3 victory over the Delta Eagles Monday.

The Patriots (6-4) trailed 2-0 before scoring five runs in the fourth inning and two in the fifth to take control. Each team scored once in the seventh inning for the final margin.

Tom McCowan went 3-for-5 with a double for Jay County, and Justin Mann was also 3-for-5. Luke Goetz and Josh Selvey added two hits apiece.

Michael Jobe got the win, allowing two runs on three hits in five innings. He struck out five and walked five.[[In-content Ad]]
