YORKTOWN - The Patriots are making winning look easy, even against teams that have proven themselves not very easy to beat.

Jay County High School's boys basketball team extended its winning streak to eight games Saturday with a convincing 52-37 victory over the Yorktown Tigers.

"We came out and executed awfully well offensively early and then played good, solid defense," said JCHS coach Craig Teagle, whose team got an unexpected night off Friday because of the weather. "We came out focused and intense. ... I'm pretty proud of the kids."

Yorktown (13-4) won nine of its first 10 games, has been ranked among the top 10 in Class 3A for much of the season and just locked up the Hoosier Heritage Conference title Friday night. But, it had all kinds of problems with the Patriots (11-4).

Jay County's Luke Goetz pilfered the ball on the opening possession for a lay-up, kicking off a 12-2 run to open the game. Kyle Simmons and Billy Wellman added 3-pointers during the stretch, helping to give the Patriots a lead they would never give up.

The Tigers pulled to within 16-14 midway through the second quarter only to have Jay County score the final seven points of the first have and the first four of the second. The Patriots never let their lead slip to single digits after that, pushing ahead by 13 at the end of the third quarter and by as many as 18 in the fourth.

It was a second straight great shooting night for JCHS on the road as it followed up a 63-percent effort at Blackford Jan. 26 with a 58-percent mark against Yorktown.

"(The kids) have to execute and they really did tonight," said Teagle, whose team consistently got good inside shots against the Tigers. "One of the things we talked about was with their length and athleticism that it was to our advantage to stay down, stay on the floor, shot fake, bounce pass, and I thought we did a ton of that. ... We really took advantage of that. Heath Rigby really did a great job all night doing that."

Rigby hit all of his two-point attempts for eight points, trailing Clint Muhlenkamp (11), Wellman (10) and Goetz (nine) in scoring for the Patriots.

"That just makes you harder to guard," said Teagle, who also got seven points on 3-of-3 shooting from Simmons, of the scoring balance. "When you share the ball like that you're a lot of fun to coach and watch."

While Jay County got consistent good looks, the Tigers struggled to get much going on the offensive end. Despite a distinct height advantage with 6-foot-10-inch Emerson Kampen and four other players at 6-foot-3 or taller, they spent most of the night shooting from the outside.

Yorktown finished just 13-of-39 (33 percent) from the field with more than half of those shots coming from 3-point range (5-of-22 for 23 percent).

"Jay County is a great team," said Yorktown coach Judd Moulton, adding that the Patriots won because of their consistent offense, tempo control, physicality, team play and great coaching. "There's a reason this is their eighth win in a row. They did a nice job defensively of taking care of the paint. That was one of the reasons they came out on top tonight."

The Patriots, whose tallest player is Muhlenkamp at 6-foot-2, also dominated the glass. They didn't give up a single offensive rebound in the first half and won the battle of the boards 24-18.

Wellman, who is listed at 5-foot-11, grabbed a game-high six rebounds, and Aaron Daniels, 5-foot-10, finished with five. Muhlenkamp had four boards, and Goetz, 5-foot-6, had four boards and four assists.

"We believe if we do things right, we block out, we swarm down in the post and recover and do the things that we need to we should win the battle of the boards every night," said Teagle. "A lot of it is just effort, getting after loose balls and long rebounds."

Elliott Kampen shot 6-of-8 for 14 points to lead the Tigers, but the rest of the squad hit just 7-of-31 from the field. Emerson Kampen was next with 12 points.

After struggling offensively in the first half for several games, the Patriots turned the tables on Yorktown and went on to win 29-22.

Jay County limited the Tigers to just seven first-half points, building a seven-point lead at the break. It was still up by six heading into the final period and won despite shooting just 2-of-7 from the foul line, where it was outscored 8-2.

Eric Homan scored a game-high nine points as the Patriots improved to 9-6. Brad Horn had six points, and Jacob Chenoweth added five.

Tim Courtney was the top scorer for Yorktown with eight points.[[In-content Ad]]
