ANDERSON — After taking two more shutout losses, the Jay County girls tennis team stood strong in their third match to salvage a third-place finish Saturday.
The Patriots topped the Muncie Southside Rebels 3-2 in their final match of the Olympic Athletic Conference tournament.
The team, which is now 3-11 with a pair of wins over Southside, started the day with 5-0 losses to the Connersville Spartans and the Anderson Highland Scots.
Carissa Wilkins came up big in the JCHS win, getting her first No. 1 singles victory. Wilkins, who moved up one spot in place of the injured Angie Stults, defeated Aubrey Green of Southside 6-2, 6-2.
The other two points in the Patriots victory came from the team’s doubles duos.
At No. 1 doubles, Jessica Muhlenkamp and Megan Knittle topped Jessica Dickinson and Kayla Holt 6-2, 6-4. Tiffani Bickel and Cindy Muhlenkamp rolled in their second set at No. 2 doubles for a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Erica Smith and Heather Flowers.
Megan Adams played a solid first set, but fell 6-2, 6-0 to Courtney Williams at No. 2 singles. Heather Ayers dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision to Hannah Hollowell at No. 3 singles.
Jay County’s closest matches in each of the shutout losses came from Bickel and Muhlenkamp. They fell 6-2, 6-2 to Heather Nobbe and Taylor Issacs of Connersville and lost to the Scots’ Heather Pardue and Emily Jones 6-2, 6-1.[[In-content Ad]]
