Jay Co. netters will open tourney versus host Giants (09/28/04)

Tennis sectional

MARION — The road to a fifth straight sectional championship match is paved for the Patriots. The only question is whether they can win a third title when they get there.

Jay County’s boys tennis team will need to win a pair of matches to reach the sectional finale at Marion, but they have already beaten the two teams which stand in their way.

The Patriots (7-6) open sectional play Thursday against the winless host Giants (0-13) at 4 p.m. They defeated Marion 4-1 in the 2004 season opener.

Next in the way would be the Blackford Bruins (7-9), who Jay County defeated 4-1 Sept. 15, in Friday’s 3:30 p.m. semifinal.

The other half of the bracket has the defending sectional champion Mississinewa Indians (13-3) taking on the Madison-Grant Argylles (5-6) in Friday’s other semifinal match. The championship match will be Saturday at 10 a.m.

Mississinewa defeated the Patriots 3-2 in last year’s sectional championship match, and the teams did not meet during the regular season this year. Jay County won sectional titles in 2000 and 2002.

Starfires open vs. HN

BLUFFTON — The South Adams boys tennis team will open its sectional tournament Thursday against the Adams Central Jets. The teams will play in first round action at Bluffton at 4:15 p.m.

In the other first-round match the host Tigers will play the Huntington North Vikings, also at 4:15 p.m.

The South Adams/Adams Central winner will go on to play the Norwell Knights in the semifinal round, and the Bluffton/Huntington North winner will go up against the Bellmont Braves. Semifinal matches will be Friday at 4:15 p.m.

The championship match will be Saturday at 10 a.m.

South Adams defeated Adams Central 4-1 this weekend on its way to the Allen County Athletic Conference tournament title. It defeated Bluffton 4-1 in the ACAC championship match.[[In-content Ad]]
