Neither the Central nor the City could upstage the County in cross country.

Jay County’s girls and boys cross country teams each came away with wins in their lone home triangular meet of the season Wednesday, each defeating Monroe Central and Union City.

The Patriots dominated the girls race, taking five of the top six spots as well as seven of the top 10 for a 17-49 victory over Union City. Monroe Central did not field a complete girls team.

The Monroe Central and Jay County boys teams finished in a tie with 28 points apiece, but the Patriots grabbed the victory thanks to the sixth-runner tiebreaker. Union City did not field a complete boys team.

“I think we’re on our way,” said first-year JCHS coach Les Bantz.

The Johnson sisters paced the Jay County girls team, starting behind Monroe Central’s Sarah Dalton before taking control of the race about a third of the way through.

Alyssa Johnson, a senior, was the top runner on the squad for the third straight race, finishing well ahead of the pack in 17-minutes, seven seconds.

Sophomore Amanda Johnson finished second overall in 17:38.

“It was just about what I expected,” Bantz said of his top two runners. “(And Kylie) Wellman really did good.”

Wellman, a Patriot freshman, was fourth just behind a runner from Union City as they headed for the woods behind the JCHS soccer field to run the final half-mile.

Wellman grabbed control in the woods, taking over third place. She did nothing but extend her advantage the rest of the way, giving Jay County the top three spots as she crossed the finish line in 17:55.

Juniors Jessica Mosier and Allison Fullenkamp finished out the Patriot team score in fifth and sixth place with times of 18:45 and 18:48 respectively. It was just Fullenkamp’s second race back from a knee injury, which had side-lined her from cross country and track for more than a year.

“The girls looked great,” said Bantz. “Allison Fullenkamp is getting there. She was 19-something at 4K in Ohio (at the Celina Rotary Invitational) and she was 18:48 here.”

Jay County’s boys team’s victory came thanks to its sixth runner, Josh Atkinson.

Atkinson, a senior, had finished second and first on the team in its first two meets, but slipped back in the pack on his home course. Still, he was able to beat Monroe Central’s fifth run for 10th place overall.

Although his finish did not count in the Jay County team score, it did serve to push the Golden Bears’ final tally one point higher, leaving a 28-28 tie. Then it was Atkinson’s 10th-place finish which broke the deadlock, as Monroe Central’s sixth runner had finished in 12th place.

The tiebreaker win from Atkinson supported a big day from freshman Brady Mills and senior Josh Hawn.

Mills took to the top of the Patriot pack for the first time this year, finishing third in 19:48 behind Monroe Central’s Seth Thomas (18:23) and Derrick Calhoun. Hawn finished next for Jay County, taking fourth in 19:55.

“This was the first time this year, in our third meet, that we had any boys under 20 (minutes),” said Bantz. “... Josh Hawn ran his best race of the year by far.”

Travis Towell was third for the Patriots and sixth overall in 20:10. Josh Selvey was right behind him in 20:20 and Doug Murray placed eighth in 20:25.

Bantz said the Jay County boys, who finished in a completely different order for the third time in three races, are starting to figure things out. The entire Patriot team trailed the top five Monroe Central runners early on, but eventually rallied and grabbed five of the top eight finishing spots.

“I think it’s a matter of learning how to race,” said Bantz. “They’ve always kind of gone out hard and settled in, I’m trying to get them to be competitively patient. They ran pretty smart. They stayed back in the pack ... They’ve got to be competitive the first two-thirds, run smart, and then just put it on the line.”

Other top-seven runners who did not factor into the team score were: Kelly Weaver (eighth in 19:33) and Cassie Laux (10th in 19:54) for the girls and Cory Mock (12th in 21:03) for the boys.[[In-content Ad]]
