HARTFORD CITY — The Patriots took their first home loss Friday night. On Saturday, they weren’t about to lose at their home away from home.
The Jay County boys basketball team stormed past the host Blackford Bruins, winning 72-42 on the court where they seem to love to play.
“It was a good bounce-back game,” said senior Zac Green. “We still have some things we didn’t do too well, but we can work on it and we’ll just keep improving. Hopefully we’ll be really good by the time sectional gets here.”
Green and his teammates hope to win at least two more games at Blackford this season, the minimum it would take to win a sectional title. (Although they have drawn the long road in each of the last four seasons.)
Jay County has enjoyed its experiences at Blackford over the last several years. They have played there 12 times since the start of the 2002-03 season, going 11-1. The lone loss came in last season’s sectional championship against Delta.
Despite playing without senior starters Tyler Rigby and John Retter for the second straight night because of pneumonia, the Patriots (10-3) left no doubt who was the better team. After falling behind 4-0, they scored 11 points in a row, led by as many as 12 points in the first quarter and went up 39-24 at the half.
“We bounced right back (from the quick deficit),” said JCHS coach Craig Teagle, whose team has beaten Blackford six consecutive times. “We started getting into our pressure when we hit some shots. From that point on it really felt like we had some momentum and control of the game. It was a good effort all around.
“We could’ve came in here and played flat, without much intensity. We were hurting a little bit, both mentally and physically, from the loss (Friday) night, because it was a game we had in hand. It was a good challenge for our kids. I was proud of them.”
Green and fellow senior Randy Evans played great basketball in the absence of their classmates, combining for 65 points on the weekend. They each had 13 points in the opening half Friday, with Evans scoring a game-high 18 and Green finishing with 16. Evans also had four assists, and Green added three.
After scoring more than two-thirds of Jay County’s points in the 47-45 loss to Anderson Highland Friday, Evans and Green got some help against Blackford.
Teagle said he thought his team did a better job of establishing the post, where Corey Comer and Clint Muhlenkamp combined to shot 9-of-12 from the field and finish with 12 and nine points respectively. Comer finished with eight rebounds, and Muhlenkamp grabbed seven.
Freshman Billy Wellman also had a career game. He was good on both of his 3-point tries en route to a career high 10 points.
Wellman said he took advice from several people who told him to keep his head up.
“It feels great,” he said. “I figured tonight no matter how many mistakes I made I’d just keep playing hard. It worked for me tonight. We’ve got so many people on this team that can score. Anybody could have done it. It just fell for me tonight.”
Jason Nantz carried the Blackford offense before the break, scoring 15 of his team-high 17 in the first half. But the Bruins had all kinds of problems dealing with Jay County’s pressure defense, turning the ball over 19 times as Evans converted several steals into easy lay-ups.
“We just panicked,” said Blackford coach John McGlothlin, whose team last lost 14 straight games since winning its season opener. “Our press breaker is good, and when we run it right people have a hard time pressing us. But they allowed the pressure to bother them.”
Nantz was joined in double figures by Caleb Seidner, who scored 10 points. Seidner added four assists, and Nantz and Corey Zimmerman each grabbed five rebounds.

Jay County could not overcome its third-quarter struggles in a 50-43 loss to the Bruins.
The Patriots were down by four at halftime, but watched the deficit grow to double digits as they managed just two points in the third period. Rhett Retter and Aaron Daniels each scored 10 points in the defeat. Adam Garringer added eight points.
Marcus Dalton carried Blackford with 15 points, including three 3-pointers in his team’s 18-point second quarter. Jason Glancy added 10 points.[[In-content Ad]]
