Jay Co. squeaks past Tigers (09/05/07)

Local roundup

Jay County's top three players all matched their Yorktown counterparts. Then Ivy Simons did just enough to lift the Patriots to victory.

Simons' 49 gave Jay County a one-stroke win over the Yorktown Tigers, 190-191, in a three-team high school golf match Tuesday at Portland Golf Club. The Wes-Del Warriors finished a distant third at 235.

The Patriots improved to 7-1 with the pair of victories, already surpassing last season's win total with four dual matches still remaining.

Trisha Champ of JCHS and Yorktown's Kelly Short shared medalist honors at 37. No. 2 players Jennifer Hunt and Julia Galliher each finished at 51, and No. 3s Cara Garringer and Alexis Mullins posted 53s. That left the match up to the final pair of competitors from each team, and the 49 from Simons edged a 50 from the Tigers' Caitlin Launders for the JCHS win.

Simons parred the 113-yard, par-3 second hole, bogied the third and finished with back-to-back bogies to pull the Patriots to the victory. Champ had two birdies and three pars in her 2-over-par round, and Hunt and Garringer each had one par.

Alex Bunch led Jay County's junior varsity squad with a 52.
