Jay Co. stays among top 10 (01/03/07)

Local roundup

The voters still think Jay County is among the best.

Back-to-back losses weren't enough to knock the Patriot boys basketball team out of the state rankings as they were voted 10th in this week's Class 3A poll by The Associated Press.

JCHS was fifth in the poll released Dec. 19. There was no poll voting during the week of Christmas.

The Patriots (6-2) have taken losses of 47-45 to unranked Class 2A Centerville and 59-42 to Class 4A No. 10 Muncie Central in their last two contests. But they remained in the top 10 with 51 poll points, 14 more than 11th-place Vincennes (5-4). Owen Valley (9-1) was ninth with 65 points.

Defending state champion New Castle (9-1) remained No. 1 with 212 of a possible 240 points despite a loss to Class 4A No. 2 Indianapolis Cathedral. Batesville (6-0) was second and Evansville Bosse (6-1) finished third.

Jay County will return to action Friday after 13 days off when it hosts Mississinewa (6-4). A potential battle of state-ranked teams comes Jan. 13 when the Patriots host Class 3A No. 6 Connersville (7-2).
