Jay Co. stays perfect

JCHS roundup

The Patriots finally got to play on their home course Thursday. The results there were much the same as they were on the road.
Jay County High School’s boys golf team stayed undefeated in dual matches, posting a 173 for its second straight outing to defeat the visiting Blackford Bruins (191).
The Patriots (4-0) also shot 173 Monday to top Winchester and Monroe Central, and posted a 169 in their season-opening win over Delta.
Junior Evan Mathias punished the par 5s at PGC, posting birdies on the 498-yard 12th and 520-yard 14th holes. He added pars on the 11th, 15th and 17th on the way to a 2-over-par 37.
Blake Thiery paced Blackford with a 46.
Adam Alfont and Zach Fullenkamp each had three pars as they shot 42 and 46 respectively for the Patriots. Austin Wendel finished with a 48, and Mitchel Rigby posted a 49.
Jay County lost the junior varsity match 216-261 as Graham Haines finished with a 60.

Softball falls 5-0
GAS CITY — Jay County managed six hits but could not push a run across the plate in a 5-0 loss Thursday to the host Mississinewa Indians, who finished 11th in the voting in this week’s Class 3A poll.
Larissa Boles suffered the loss as she gave up five runs — three earned — on seven hits and two walks while striking out five batters. Mississinewa scored twice in the first and third innings and once in the second.
Chelsea Tighe finished with two hits and a stolen base off the Patriots, who dropped to 6-6. Catherine Dunn, Katie Aker, Katlin Petro and Courtney Finnerty added one hit apiece.

JV baseball losses
PARKER CITY — A two-run lead slipped away, but the Patriot junior varsity baseball team came up big in the first extra frame in an 8-3, eight-inning win over the host Monroe Central Golden Bears.
Jay County (5-6) led 3-1 before the Golden Bears pulled even with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. After a scoreless seventh, the Patriots put up five runs in the eighth to take the win.
Nate Brackman paced the Patriot offense, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run. Andrew McShane added a double, two RBIs and a run, and Mitchell Kunkler went 2-for-4 with a run.
Jake Carpenter tossed three innings of relief for the win. He gave up two runs — one earned — on three hits while striking out two.
