The evening was all fun for the Jay County girls. The boys had to work a little harder, but came up with a win also.
Both track teams were victorious Monday night with the Patriot girls stomping the Mississinewa Indians 109-14. Dexter Shreve came up with three victories for the boys in a 65-57 win.
Shreve and fellow freshman Lindsey Current were the story of the day in the high jump as they both posted career-best numbers.
Current won the girls competition by five inches, clearing the bar at five feet, one inch. Molly Coffin of Muncie Southside won the 2005 sectional with a leap of five feet.
Shreve put himself in similar position as improved five inches from just last week. He won at six feet, three inches and will be among the sectional favorites as Jay County’s Mark Kelly won last season’s title at six feet even.
“Adam Grile really spent a lot of time with him Saturday,” said JCHS boys coach Greg Garringer of the former and current Patriot high jumpers. “He just worked on some form.”
“I knew Lindsay would be pretty tough in high jump,” added Patriot girls coach Les Bantz, “but I wasn’t really aware of the long jump.”
Current and Shreve were each first in the long jump as well at distances of 14 feet, 63/4 inches and 18 feet, three inches respectively. Shreve added a victory in the 300-meter hurdles in 47.17 seconds.
Five more Patriots added two wins apiece — Amanda Johnson, Erika Hunt and Sara Garringer for the girls, and Justin Gilbert and Joseph Vormohr for the boys.
Vormohr and Garringer completed the field event sweeps for both teams.
Vormohr had tosses of 47 feet, one inch and 139 feet, 21/4 inches in the shot put and discus respectively. Garringer won the shot put at 29 feet, four inches and had a toss of 82 feet even to win the discus.
“We were fairly consistent on a cold night,” said Garringer. “We’re happy with that.”
Johnson led a pack of Jay County runners in the 1,600-meter run. She, Alyssa Johnson, Jessica Mosier and Kylie Wellman were at the front of the pack for the first two laps and pulled away in the third to dominate the race. They finished in the same order, with Amanda Johnson three seconds ahead of her sister in six-minutes, 13.98 seconds.
Amanda Johnson also cruised in the 400 dash, flying to the lead on the back stretch and winning in 1:07. She was also second in the 200 dash, three tenths off teammate Tequila Guntle’s winning time of 29.8.
Hunt was first in both hurdle races against only teammates as the small Union City squad had no competitors. She finished the 100 in 19.1 and the 300 with a time of 56.9.
Jay County dominated the remaining two distance events with Jessica Mosier scoring an easy win in the 800 run in 2:47.24 and Alyssa Johnson first in the 3,200 run in 13:01.
Bantz mixed up his relays with each group still bringing home victories.
In the 4x100 relay Shalynn Bailey, Janel Chittum, Kristi Morningstar and Christa Castillo were first in 59.2. Morningstar, Chittum, Mosier and Alyssa Johnson took the 4x400 relay in 5:07.14, and Allison Fullenkamp, Brianne Wellman, Brittany Burris and Tina Gingrasso teamed to win the 4x800 relay in 12:27.6.
“It was a lot of fun. We kind of anti-cipated this,” said Bantz of the margin of victory. “We just wanted to try to mix the girls around and try to make it a good workout tonight.
“We’re hopefully going to get a little bit better and a little bit better. I’m just proud of all the girls.”
The running events for the boys were split down the middle, with Jay County winning everything shorter than 400 meters and Union City taking everything else.
Gilbert led the effort in the sprints where he was first in the 100 dash with a time of 12.3 and the 200 dash in 24.41. He teamed with Micah Enyart, Brandon Reynard and Dustin Harris to win the 4x100 relay in 46.27.
Denny Gardner earned the other individual win for the Patriots, taking the 110 hurdles with a time of 18.79.
“I’m pretty happy with tonight,” said Garringer. “Right now we need meets like this to get their confidence back up. We need to be peaking when we go to the Blackford Invitational in three weeks.”[[In-content Ad]]
