PORTLAND — They never stopped trying to comeback. Jay County just wouldn’t allow it.

The Winchester Golden Falcons made run after run, but the Patriot volleyball team never let them do much more than pull even as it opened the season with a 25-20, 25-21, 25-21 victory.

Winchester (0-1) kept rallying, scoring nine straight points to come back from a 13-6 deficit in the first game, and going on a 7-1 run in the third to climb out of a 6-0 hole. However, the Golden Falcons led for just one point in the final two games as Jay County kept shutting their comeback tries down.

“It was kind of what I’ve been thinking would happen,” said Jay County coach Fred Medler. “We’re going to be pretty good. We just haven’t seen that intensity level in practice before.”

The Patriots (1-0) set the tone in the first game after Winchester came out of a time out and rallied for a 15-13 lead. Still trailing 19-16, Jay County took control when three straight unforced errors by the Golden Falcons opened the door.

Senior middle hitter Ashley Overla ripped a kill for a 20-19 lead. Winchester managed to tie the game at 20, but senior left-side hitter Erin St. Myers smashed a kill to give the Patriots the lead for good.

An ace by St. Myers was the beginning of the end as she served out the match for a 25-20 victory.

The ace was one of three by St. Myers in the match. She also had a match-high 16 digs and was second on the team with 10 points.

“I think we started off pretty well,” said Medler. “They called a time out and we had some serve receptions where we were shaky. Then (Rachel) Hirschy got on a roll in the middle and they ran off nine points.”

But, once the Patriots withstood that rally the Falcons hardly ever sniffed the lead again.

Two aces by Kelly Sautbine, two kills by Julie Sours and a kill from Markie Runyon powered 6-0 start to the second game for Jay County. Winchester closed to within two points on several occasions, but kills by Sautbine, Runyon and Theresa Reinhart down the stretch sealed the game.

Runyon capped another 6-0 run to start game three with a pair of kills. The Golden Falcons managed to tie it at 7-7, but the Patriots posted a 6-0 run on St. Myers’ serve and never trailed again.

“Markie Runyon was big time,” said Medler. “One of the things she hasn’t done was stay behind the ball as a hitter. Tonight, she did.”

Jay County got more than half of its kills from the middle hitters as Runyon and Overla finished with 10 apiece. They each added one block.

Sautbine racked up 16 service points, including four aces. Miranda Tingley had 24 assists, and Leah Gasparovic came up with 15 digs.

Winchester coach Jim Palilonis said his team just needs more time on the court.

“I think it has a lot to do with communication,” he said. “We haven’t quite started talking to each other as much as they need to.”

The Golden Falcons were led by Hirschy, who finished with eight kills and three blocks. Mallory McCormick added five kills, and Jamie Almonrode had four.

Katie McCoy picked up eight digs and two aces, and Alena Pitman had 21 assists.

Jay County will take to the road Thursday to visit Class 3A No. 7 Delta at 6 p.m.

The Patriots cruised fairly easily through the first game, but had all kinds of serve reception problems in the second and never recovered in a 14-25, 25-13, 25-21 loss to Winchester.

After taking the first game Jay County couldn’t handle Emily Peacock’s serve and fell behind 13-2 in the second. They never pulled closer than 10 points as the Golden Falcons evened the match.

Game three was tied at 13-13, but the Patriots’ serve receiving problems resurfaced as Winchester went on an 11-4 run.

Sharon Dirksen managed to serve three straight points to keep Jay County alive, but Jessica Sells notched a kill to end a long rally and give the Golden Falcons the win.

Sarah Mescher shared a team high with five kills for Jay County. She also had five digs and four points.

Shelby Rines also had five kills and a team-leading seven digs. She and Dirksen each picked up a pair of aces.

Jessica Muhlenkamp had five digs, Kelly Sautbine scored five points and Erica Clark finished with 10 assists.[[In-content Ad]]
