Jay Co. tankers eighth at Norwell (11/15/04)

OSSIAN — The Jay County girls swim team opened its season with an eighth-place finish at the Norwell Invitational Saturday. The Patriots scored 47 points in the 11-team event.

The host Knights were first with 391 points, well ahead of second place Oak Hill at 220. South Adams took third with 182.

Junior Lindsey Vesperry turned in the top finish for Jay County, placing sixth in the 50-yard freestyle. She finished in a personal-best time of 28.42 seconds.

Vesperry was also 10th in the 100-yard freestyle in 1-minute, 6.29 seconds.

Sophomore Amber Kelly was the only other Jay County swimmer to finish better than 10th individually. She was ninth in the 100-yard butterfly.

Senior captain Julie Sours added a 10th-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley.

The Patriots had a pair of ninth-place relay efforts. Vesperry, Kelly, Sours and Ashley Imel finished the 200-yard medley relay in 2:16.61, and Vesperry, Sours, Imel and Andrea Collins completed the 200-yard freestyle relay in 2:02.80.

Jay County will open dual meet action Tuesday when it hosts Muncie Southside at 6 p.m.

Bowlers win pair

The Jay County High Rollers scored a pair of wins this weekend. The girls team picked up its first ever victory by a 16-4 margin over Southern Wells at Northside Lanes in Hartford City, and boys team toppled conference favorite Huntington North at Rainbow Lanes in Huntington.

The girls dominated their first game against Southern Wells, winning 818-625 and taking eight out of 10 possible points. They won the second game 732-713.

Autumn Shepherd paced Jay County with a 348 series, while Summer Roush rolled a 342. Shanda Morningstar had an especially strong first game with a 210.

The boys edged Huntington North 1,015-1,014 in the first game to pull out to a 7-3 lead. They then won the second game by a more comfortable 1,043-978 margin for the victory.

Chris Elmore led the way with a 450. Cory Mock rolled a 433, Cody Wright had a 412 and Preston Shoopman finished at 405.

The junior varsity High Rollers lost by a tight 11-9 score to South Adams. They led 8-2 after the first game, but managed just one point in the second in the defeat.

Kyle Blowers powered the team with a 338, and Baylin Brown was right behind him with a 335.

The boys and girls teams will be in action against Heritage Wednesday at The Brown Bowl in Portland at 4:30 p.m.

Coaching clinic

Jay County High School will host a coaching clinic for IHSAA certification in December.

The clinic, which will be Saturday, Dec. 4 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., is open to the public. Those who complete the course will be eligible for IHSAA certification to become a high school coach.

The course will cover liability and safety, sport nutrition, competition, sportsmanship and violence and IHSAA guidelines. The cost is $25.

Basketball tournament

The Jay Community Center will host a 3-on-3 basketball tournament Friday, Nov. 26.

Each team may have a roster of up to five players. The tournament will be played in two divisions — 29-and-younger and 30-and-older.

The registration fee is $50 per team, and the registration deadline is Wednesday, Nov. 24.

AAU tryouts

Tryouts for the Jay County fifth grade AAU boys basketball team will be Sunday, Nov. 21 at the Jay Community Center.

The tryouts will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Players should come dressed to practice.
