Local Roundup

The Jay County swim teams had trouble finding victories Thursday, taking first in just seven out of 24 events combined.

The Patriot boys team picked up four of those wins in suffering a 110-73 loss to the Anderson Highland Scots. The girls team dropped a 112-74 defeat against Anderson Highland as it dropped to 2-3.

Matt Peterson and Adam Miller were each in on a pair of wins for the boys team (1-1).

Peterson took first in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.74 seconds, and Miller won the 100-yard freestyle in 56.79. The pair teamed with Daniel Fisher and Joseph Vormohr to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1-minute, 44.67 seconds.

Derick Lee picked up the other Patriot win, finishing the 100-yard butterfly in 1:05.04.

Seniors Rachel McKee and Sarah Miller recorded the three victories for the girls team.

McKee got back on track in the 50-yard freestyle, rebounding from her first loss of the season Tuesday against Bluffton for a victory in 28.67. She remained unbeaten in the 100-yard freestyle, rolling to victory in 1:02.67.

Sarah Miller turned in her usual dominant diving effort, scoring 220.65 points for a 40-point win.

Freshman Amber Kelly had the lone career-best time of the evening, finishing the breaststroke in 1:28.83.

Jay County will compete in the Lawrence North Relays Saturday. Diving will begin at 9:30 a.m., with swimming events scheduled to start at noon.

Jay County fullback Alex Loucks was honored as an All-State honorable mention player in Class 4A by The Associated Press. The All-State teams were released Wednesday.

The Patriots’ senior runner broke the 1,000-yard barrier in the final game of the season, a sectional semifinal loss to Muncie Southside. He scored 10 rushing touchdowns on the year, and also had 10 receptions for 172 yards.

Freshmen even record

The Jay County freshman boys basketball team pulled even at 1-1 Thursday with a 37-16 trouncing of the Union City Indians.
