CONVERSE — The Patriots were able to keep their momentum going.
Coming off Saturday’s victory at the Delta Duals, the Jay County wrestling team won seven out of 11 contested matches for a 41-31 victory over Oak Hill Wednesday. It improved to 10-5 with the win.
Rodney Cassell scored the quickest of Jay County’s four pins on the evening, winning the 189-pound match in 1-minute, eight seconds. Nathan Daniels (135) was just behind him with a pin in 1:26, Justin Mann (130) scored a pin in 2:23 and Nathan Conatser (215) got one in 3:46.
Senior Devon Huftel (152) won by a 24-9 technical fall, and fellow senior Josh Thornburg (112) grabbed an 11-8 decision win. Micah Enyart (140) took the closest match of the night by a 9-8 count.
Delta stomps JC tankers
PORTLAND — The four wins Jay County had against South Adams Monday night looked good after Wednesday’s meet.
The Patriot swimmers had the victory total from two days earlier cut in half as they lost to the Delta Eagles. The girls team fell by a 122-63 score, and the boys team took a 126-54 defeat.
Lindsey Vesperry posted the best time of her career to take the only girls win, finishing the 100-yard freestyle in 1-minute, 1.46 seconds. She also had a career-best time in the 50-yard freestyle at 27.36, but lost by five hundredths of a second.
Derick Lee hacked three seconds off his personal-best time in the 200-yard individual medley as he picked up the boys team’s lone victory. He won by seven seconds with a time of 2:24.12.
Rollers top Norwell
DECATUR — The Jay County High Rollers girls bowling team defeated Norwell 11-9 in Baker-style play Wednesday.
The team fell behind 5-3, but then won three straight games to go up 9-5. Norwell picked up one game to tighten the score, but Jay County sealed the victory in the next with a team-best Baker score of 201.
Eagle cagers stumble
Wednesday was a rough evening for the West Jay basketball teams as they suffered four losses.
The boys eighth grade team fell 56-44 to Selma, and the seventh grade team dropped by a 29-26 score. The girls teams played Crestview, with the eighth graders losing 36-19 while the seventh graders fell 33-20.
The eighth grade boys (3-5) were outscored 16-8 in both the first and third quarters. Brady Mills scored 17 points, and Blake Price followed with nine.
The Eagle seventh grade boys (6-2) tried to rally with 13 points in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to overcome a 13-point halftime deficit. Taylor Farmer led the team with 13 points, and Willie Mayfield scored five.
West Jay’s seventh grade girls (4-2) went scoreless in the first quarter and never completely recovered. Brittany Muhlenkamp finished with 10 points, and Jordyn Swearingen added six.
Chelsea Grady was the high scorer for the Eagle eighth grade girls with seven points, and Kelci Reed scored six.[[In-content Ad]]
