Jay Co. volleyball rolls over visiting Tigers (10/10/07)

The Jay County High School volleyball team cruised to a three-game win Tuesday over the visiting Bluffton Tigers, pulling to within a game of .500 in the process.

Junior libero Chelsea Grady had nine points and seven digs in the victory for the Patriots, who have now matched their win total from last season as they stand at 14-15. They will host Class 3A No. 5 Bellmont Thursday.

Sharon Dirksen posted 26 assists and five kills, and Ashley Langenkamp scored six of her seven points on aces. Kelsey Wood racked up 13 kills, and Sarah Mescher followed with five kills.

Shelby Rines had a team-best 13 digs, and Kristi Morningstar finished with seven points.

SA spikers top Indians

BERNE - After dropping its first game the South Adams volleyball team bounced back to win three straight in a 16-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-14 victory over the visiting Union City Indians.

Maranda Potts powered the Starfire victory with team highs of 23 digs and nine kills. Andrea Moser had matching totals of eight kills and eight digs.

Jacie Yoder put up 24 assists, and Whitney Ellinger notched eight kills.

South Adams lost the junior varsity match 25-12, 15-25, 15-14.

EJMS edges Eagles

The East Jay Middle School seventh grade football team held off its West Jay counterpart Tuesday, 20-16. In the eighth grade game, East Jay won 40-6.

East Jay's seventh grade Chiefs remain undefeated at 7-0 after building a 20-0 lead before the West Jay Eagles rallied in the final three minutes of the game.

Brock McFarland touchdown passes of 11 and 19 yards to Kegan Comer in the first quarter and Daniel Walter in the second respectively staked East Jay to a 14-0 halftime lead. McFarland added a 15-yard interception return for a score with just 3:30 left in the game to put his Chiefs up 20-0.

But it was far from over, as West Jay scored on a 60-yard run with 2:54 remaining. The Eagles put another TD on the board with a 25-yard run with 49 seconds left, and were successful on two-point conversions after each score for the 20-16 final margin.

Andre Duke contributed two touchdowns in the East Jay eighth grade team's big win, tossing a 40-yard TD pass to Eric Beougher and running one in from 31 yards out. Matt Taylor had a 2-yard TD run for the Chiefs (4-4), Kamron Bentz scored on a 9-yard run and Spencer Hodge capped the scoring with a 38-yard run with one minute to play.

Stars split defensive battles

WOODBURN - South Adams' seventh grade football team (2-4-1) closed its season with a 7-0 victory over the Woodlan Warriors. The Starfire eighth graders lost, 8-0.

The lone SAMS touchdown came in the fourth quarter of the seventh grade game when L.J. Moser scored on a 16-yard run. Moser carried seven times for 62 yards, and Blake Fox led the defense with five solo tackles.

Marcus Rich had 10 carries for 58 yards for the eighth graders (3-4). Drew Taylor had six tackles, and Rich added five tackles and an interception.
