Jay County 7th at Muncie Central (08/09/06)

Local roundup

MUNCIE - Jay County got a couple of personal-best scores, but they weren't enough to get the team out of the basement at the Muncie Central Invitational Tuesday.

The Patriot girls golf team finished last out of the seven full teams competing, scoring a 442. Richmond won with a score of 354 at the Players Club.

Trisha Champ again paced the Patriots with a consistent round of 42 on the front nine and 41 on the back. She had seven pars and added a birdie on the par-4 11th hole as she finished sixth, six strokes behind medalist Katie Windlan of Anderson Highland.

Personal-best scores for the Patriots came from Brittney Lewis and Rachael Osterholt. Lewis broke her previous 18-hole mark by nearly 30 strokes with a 112, and Osterholt hit a 40-foot birdie during her round for a 126.

Ashley Bunch finished at 123, and fellow senior Miranda Denney was one stroke behind her at 124.

Houck competes Friday

Drew Houck will get his shot Friday.

Houck, an East Jay eighth grader, will take part in the 2006 U.S. Junior Olympic Skills Competition in Colorado Springs, Colo., competing in the basketball portion Friday at 2 p.m. He will be competing against Cody Johnson, Oldsmar, Fla., and Joshua Christensen, Laie, Hawaii.

The event will begin with opening ceremonies Thursday at 7 p.m. and finish Saturday with closing ceremonies at 6:30 p.m.

Houck scored 44 points to win the regional competition at Jay Community Center. His total was the best among the regionals in the Central portion of the country, earning him a national berth.

Many other area athletes won the regional competition at JCC, but their scores were not good enough to make the national finals. Other regional winners were: Kiante Enis, Chris Stephen, Drew Houck, Kai-Li Baughman and Hannah Ainsworth in basketball; Mitchel Bruggeman and Dylan Swingley in soccer; Conrad Smith, William Hicks, Houck, Meygan Maloney and Abby Dunlavy in tennis; and Enis, Corey Bellis, Cody Bellis, Shelby Shirk and Jordan McMillan in track and field.[[In-content Ad]]
