Jay County cruises to OAC championship (10/10/03)

Local Roundup

Jay County’s girls finished behind Huntington North at the Blackford Invitational. They didn’t let the Vikings, or anyone else, stay close at the Olympic Athletic Conference meet Thursday.

The Patriots took three of the top five slots in dominating the OAC meet at Mounds State Park in Anderson, winning the conference championship with a score of 32. Connersville placed second with 46 points, followed by Huntington North, Anderson highland and Muncie Southside.

“It was pretty neat, pretty exciting,” said Jay County coach Trent Paxson. “The girls did an outstanding job. They were focused. They had a desire and a commitment to go down and win the conference. I believe they did it in a pretty good fashion.”

Huntington North took the win in the boys competition, edging Connersville 34-39. Jay County was fifth with 115 points.

Alyssa Johnson broke away from the pack quickly and led the entire race. She finished first in 16:22, 18 seconds before Samantha Herdrich of Connersville.

Nicole VanSkyock ran her typical race, starting in the pack before slowly climbing to the front. The senior came in with a third-place finish in 16:46.

Allison Fullenkamp completed the trio of Patriot runners in the top five with her fifth-place result in 16:55. Jill Roughia was 11th in 18:14, with Lindsey Vesperry 12th with a time of 18:17.

Vesperry came in a spot in front of freshman Jessica Mosier, who didn’t have her best race, but still finished 13th. Vanessa Wilkins placed 17th for Jay County.

“Jill and Lindsey ran excellent races,” said Paxson. “I think it was good for Lindsey to know that she can run (at that level). She hadn’t really broken that barrier, but with last night, she’s getting there.”

Jay County’s boys had two runners break under 20 minutes for the first time all season, despite running on the very hilly Anderson course.

Josh Atkinson was 19th in 19:46, with Nathan McClung 21st in 19:59. Senior Paul Imel was close, finishing 23rd in 20:01.

Cory Mock was 25th in 20:26, and Josh Selvey finished 27th in 20:31 to complete the team scoring. Doug Murray placed 30th, and Josh Hawn was 31st.

“Having two guys in the 19s in a course that was in that condition was good,” said Paxson. “Maybe come sectional time they can be in the low 19s.”

Both Patriot teams will run in the sectional meet at Bellmont Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Central tops Jay

Jay County’s boys soccer team couldn’t hold its lead Thursday in a 2-1 loss to the Muncie Central Bearcats.

The Patriots went up 1-0 with about five minutes to go in the first half when a Trent Bailey shot rebounded off the Central goalie and Kyle Carpenter put it in for a score. However, it took just two minutes for the Bearcats to tie the game on a Frank Navarro header.

Dave Johnston had an opportunity to give Jay County the lead, but his penalty kick was saved at the 22:19 mark of the second half. Matt Countryman scored the game-winning goal for Central with nine minutes to play.

The Patriots (9-5) had 11 shots on goal in the game compared to just six for the Bearcats. Johnston and Carpenter led Jay County with three apiece, and Bailey had two.

Bailey had one save, and Drew Lloyd finished with three.

The final regular-season game for Jay County will be at home Saturday against Anderson Highland at 2 p.m.
