PORTLAND — The Jay County tennis team got a good start to the Olympic Athletic Conference season. It will know where it really stands in the OAC by the time prom rolls around Saturday night.

The Patriots crushed Muncie South Thursday 5-0, and now look forward to the yearly prom-Saturday conference double-header against Huntington North and Connersville.

“We’re 1-0 in the conference,” said Jay County coach Deb Miller, whose team moved to 3-2 overall with the victory. “We have three more to go and the next three are going to be a lot more challenging for us.

“We’re going to have to step it up and be mentally tough over the next several matches.”

It was a fairly easy win for the Patriots over the Rebels as they took all five matches in straight sets. They gave up more than two games in just one of the five varsity matches.

Seniors Kristen Klatt and Kelly Hess had the most dominating victories on the night.

Klatt seemed a bit tentative during her match at No. 2 singles with Robyn Kissick, but came alive when she needed to. After fighting off a game point in the sixth game of the first set, Klatt ripped off a pair of powerful serves Kissick couldn’t return.

The improved serving lifted her to a 6-0 victory in the first set. She dropped one game in the second and settled in for the 6-0, 6-1 win.

Hess was in equal command against Amanda Brand at No. 3 singles. She gave up her only game in the first set and cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory.

“Kristen and Kelly are playing well at their spots,” said Miller.

“I served well, but I could’ve hit my ground strokes better,” added Klatt. “I was kind of getting nervous and then not relaxing.”

Daniela Harringer lost just two games as she completed the Jay County sweep of the singles matches. She topped Brittany Hale 6-1, 6-1.

Erin St. Myers and Brittany Pinkerton also teamed for a quick win at No. 2 double. They shut out Jennifer Osborne and Brittany Cook in the first set, gave up a game quickly in the second before rolling on.

The Patriot pair was up 5-1 in the second set when Osborne and Cook had a chance to take a second game, but couldn’t capitalize. Pinkerton saved the game point with a serve Muncie South couldn’t return and Jay County took three points in a row to finish the match.

The longest struggle of the night for Jay County came at No. 1 doubles, where Erin Schmiesing and Whitney Schemenaur battled Heather Bailey and Jamie Char.

Schmiesing and Schemenaur took the first set in timely fashion with a 6-3 win, but fell behind 3-1 in the second. They fought back to take a 5-4 lead, but Bailey and Char pulled out the next game with a volley winner to tie it.

The Jay County duo had to fight off a Rebel game point two games later to avoid a tiebreaker, and then squandered one of their own. They finally put the match away when Muncie Southside misplayed a shot from Schemenaur for a 6-3, 7-5 final.

“The girls know they need to keep working on their match preparedness before, during and after the match,” said Miller. “The score reflects a nice win, but I know they’re capable of a lot more.”

The Patriots will host the Vikings and the Spartans in double-header action Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. The annual twin bill is always the biggest day in determining who will walk away with the OAC title.

“I think we can win conference,” said Klatt. “Everybody just has to relax and play their own games, and we’ll have a chance.”

Junior varsity

Jay County’s junior varsity team also shut out Muncie Southside for a 5-0 win Thursday.

Niki Guntle and Brianne Morrical scored the lone Patriot shutout of the day, topping Rhiannon Bonshire and Jennifer Caudill at No. 1 doubles 8-0. Angie Stults and Shonda Sutton teamed for an 8-2 victory over Emily Cunningham and Eryn Cool at No. 2 doubles, 8-2.

In singles matches Chelsea Reff defeated Alice Chevalier 8-1, Amanda Hicks beat Jennifer Rinearson 8-3 and Stephanie Homan got by Lyne Walker 8-2.

In the only exhibition match of the night Jessica DeRome and Jenae Horn beat Bonshire and Caudill 8-2.[[In-content Ad]]
