Jay County falls to Wayne

FORT WAYNE — The Patriots slowed down a hot-hitting Wayne squad, but the Generals’ used timely hits in a 5-1 win over the visiting Jay County High School baseball team.
The host Generals nabbed an early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The teams went scoreless over the next three innings until the Patriots (7-12) got on the board in the fifth when Levi Stant scored on a fielder’s choice by Jason Houston.
The one-run deficit didn’t last long, though, as the Generals answered with a pair of runs in the home half of the frame and added one more in the sixth.
Toby McCallister smacked a double for the Patriots’ only extra-base hit. Kyle Selvey, Chandler Jacks and Wesley Hibbard all hit singles.
Chaz Carroll took the loss for the Patriots, giving up four runs in five innings while striking out two and walking one.

Tribe blows out Cavs
SIDNEY, Ohio — In a battle of two squads ranked in the Division IV top-10, the Fort Recovery baseball team showed it is worthy of its spot
The No. 6 Indians (20-4, 6-3 Midwest Athletic Conference) scored six runs in the first inning and then piled on 10 more in a 16-3 win over seventh-ranked Lehman Catholic.
 The Cavaliers scored two in the third to get within four, 6-2, but the Tribe added one run in the fourth and five in the fifth to break open the game. Lehman Catholic cut into the lead with a run in the bottom half of the fifth inning, but the Indians struck for four more in the sixth.
Cole Wendel, who got the save by pitching the game’s final three innings, led the Indians with four hits and five RBIs. Two of Jackson Hobbs’ three hits went for doubles, and Kyle Schroer also had a trio of singles.
Kent Retz started on the bump and got the win for the Indians.

Mitch Stammen, Elijah Kahlig, Blake Boughman and Derek Backs also added hits. Stammen swiped two bases, pushing his season total to a school-record 27.
Fort Recovery will play in the district semifinal at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday against Minster at Coldwater.

Stars win big
UNION CITY — Some teams struggle to score 12 runs in a game.
The South Adams softball team scored a dozen in the first inning Monday in a 15-1 win over the Union City Indians.
The Starfires added to their lead, scoring one in the second and two in the fourth before the Indians ended the shutout in the home half of the fourth.
Alaina Johnston had four hits, including a pair of triples, and four RBIs to lead the South Adams offense to 18 hits. Alyssa Bluhm had three hits, including a double, three RBIs and scored three times. Maddie Morgan had a single, a double and drove in three runs. Kierstyn Grimm, Brandy Rogers and Reba Morehouse added two hits apiece.
Katelin Augsburger got the win without giving up a hit in three innings. She struck out four and didn’t allow a walk. Bluhm pitched in relief, giving up one earned run on three hits and striking out two.

Ponderosa wins late
A five-run fifth inning gave Ponderosa a 9-6 victory over William’s Auto Parts on Monday in Portland Junior League Rookie League action.
AJ Myers and Ryne Goldsworthy paved the Ponderosa offense with three hits and two RBIs apiece, and Jeremiah Canterbury added a pair of singles and drove in a run.
Ron Wagner and Ryan Timmerman each had three hits for William’s Auto. Wagner had a double and drove in a run. Dominick Bright had two hits, and Joseph Geesaman added a two-RBI double.[[In-content Ad]]
