Jay County football faces difficult sectional road (10/05/04)

Sectional football

For the third straight year, sectional 12 is one of the most lop-sided in Indiana high school football.

Once again the two-time defending sectional champion Muncie Central Bearcats and the 2001 champion Delta Eagles stand as the cream of the crop. They are both 7-0, and both ranked among the top 10 in Class 4A.

Only one of the other six teams, the Muncie Southside Rebels, has more than two wins. The remaining five teams, four of which are among the bottom six teams in Class 4A according to the Sagarin Ratings, have a combined record of 6-29.

The set-up is simple: Stay away from the two big guns and you have a chance to play for a sectional title. The Rebels did that Monday. Jay County drew the dagger.

The Patriots (2-5) got lined up against the Class 4A No. 3 Bearcats in the state-wide tournament draw Monday evening. They will host Muncie Central in first-round action Friday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m.

In the other first-round game on Jay County’s side of the bracket, winless New Castle will host No. 8 Delta. Thus, the Patriots would likely have to go through a pair of state-ranked foes to reach their first sectional championship game since 2000.

Muncie Southside (4-3) drew the easy road for a chance at a second straight sectional championship appearance, opening tournament play at Pendleton Heights (1-6). In the other first-round game on that half of the bracket Connersville (1-6) will visit Greenfield-Central (2-5).

None of the teams which meet in the first round play each other during the regular season.

Jay County lost 33-2 to Delta in week one this year, and dropped a 30-29 decision to Muncie Southside. It defeated Connersville 21-20.

The Patriots last met the Bearcats in the 2002 sectional semifinal round, losing 20-0.

Muncie Central defeated Delta 16-9 in the first round of sectional action last season, and went on to the title with a 36-6 victory over Muncie Southside.

South Adams

The Starfires have a remarkably similar draw to that of Jay County. Only, they have to start on the road.

South Adams (2-5) will play its opening round game at Class 2A No. 3 Eastbrook (7-0) Friday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. If they were to get past the Panthers, the road would not get any easier for the Starfires as Winchester (7-0) hosts Centerville (5-2) in the other first-round game in their half of the bracket.

Alexandria (2-5) will meet Oak Hill (4-3) in first-round action on the other half of the sectional 28 bracket, and Bluffton (1-6) will visit Madison-Grant (3-4).

Of the first-round games, only Winchester and Centerville will meet during the regular season. They will play at Winchester in back-to-back weeks, meeting to decide the Tri-Eastern Conference title in the final week of the regular season and again in the first week of tournament play.

Against sectional opponents this season South Adams lost 6-2 to Bluffton and 27-6 to Winchester.[[In-content Ad]]
