Jay County freshmen hold on to defeat Eagles (08/24/04)

Local Roundup

Jay County never trailed Monday night as it was able to hang on for a 14-12 freshman football victory over the Delta Eagles.

The host Patriots looked to be in good shape after scoring for a 14-6 fourth quarter lead, but Delta marched right back down the field to pull within two points. However, Jay County’s defense stood strong on the two-point conversion try and stopped a final drive by the Eagles in the last 1:30 of the game to earn the victory.

Kyle Cook scored the first touchdown of the contest for the Patriots as he broke through on a fourth-and-goal play in the first quarter. His 1-yard dive capped an opening drive which including passes from quarterback Aaron Daniels to Michael Jobe for 17 yards and Austin May for 30 yards.

Daniels passed to Jobe for the two-point conversion and an 8-0 lead.

Delta closed to within 8-6 in the third quarter before Cook scored again. The fullback took a screen pass from Justin Mann and shot down the right sideline for a 55-yard touchdown play.

Sam Lyons paced the defense with four tackles. Jobe had a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
