Jay County girls finish as runners-up at Delta (09/25/06)

MUNCIE - Jay County's girls cross country team put four runners in the top 15 Saturday for a runner-up finish at the Delta Invitational.

The Patriots scored 58 points, just five back of champion New Palestine at the nine-team meet. The host Eagles were third with 109.

The Jay County boys team was last out of nine teams with 258 points. New Castle and Anderson Highland each scored 53 points, with New Castle taking the title by way of the sixth-runner tiebreaker.

Amanda Johnson led the effort for the Patriot girls, who are now 46-8 on the season and have finished first or second at six out of seven meets. She was fourth overall out of 57 runners with a time of 16-minutes, 26 seconds, just four seconds behind Decatur Central's Sutton Knapp.

After New Castle's Ashton Utt took fifth, Kylie Wellman crossed the finish line for Jay County. She was seven seconds behind Utt and two ahead of Delta's top runner, Jami Carter, finishing sixth in 16:47.

Jess Mosier gave the Patriots a third runner in the top 10, finishing 10th in 17:14. Fellow senior Allison Fullenkamp added another in the top 15 with her 14th-place finish in 17:37.

Tina Gingrasso rounded out the team score in 24th at 18:09.

Brady Mills was the only runner to finish in the top 50 for the Patriot boys (3-55) in the field of 60. He topped the team in 36th place at 19:25.

He was followed by Tevan Nichols (52nd - 20:54), Josh Selvey (55th - 21:28), Ty Fullenkamp (56th - 21:43) and Adam Mescher (59th - 23:06).

Also running for Jay County were Kari Hemmelgarn (26th - 18:11) for the girls and Dylan Cook (60th - 25:57) for the boys.

Brittany Burris and Cassie Laux went one-two for the Patriots in the girls junior varsity race with times of 18:13 and 18:53 respectively. They were followed by Kristen Selvey (fourth - 19:03), Jenna Valentine (sixth - 19:11) and Paige Klinger (18th - 21:46).

Junior high

Local schools had an excellent day with East Jay finishing first among the girls and South Adams winning the eighth grade boys competition.

The Chief girls were first with 32 points, followed by South Adams (61) and Delta (79). West Jay was fourth out of the eight teams with 120.

South Adams edged Benjamin Rush for the eighth grade boys win 42-26. East Jay was sixth out of seven with 133.

East Jay topped the three area schools in the seventh grade boys event, finishing third with 88 points behind Delta (22) and Selma (68). South Adams was eighth out of nine teams, and West Jay did not have enough runners for a team score.

Hannah Moore of South Adams had the top individual effort, finishing first in the girls race by a more than 20 seconds in 11-minutes, 55 seconds.

The Chiefs were carried to the title by the back-to-back-to-back finish from Katie Simmons, Katie Butcher and Leah Wellman. Simmons took third in 12:27, followed by Butcher in 12:34 and Wellman in 12:38.

Finishing off the East Jay win were Deidre Chenoweth (12th - 13:28) and Laura Bowen (13th - 13:32). Behind Moore for the Starfires were Jenna Smith (sixth - 12:59), Alexia Sparks (eighth - 13:07), Kristen Muselman (24th - 13:59) and Adriana Teeter (26th - 14:04).

Annie Jetmore led the West Jay girls, finishing ahead of Chenoweth in 11th at 13:21. Joining her were Megan J. Price (21st - 13:51), Elizabeth Lennartz (28th - 14:10), Macey Gerber (33rd - 14:15) and Megan E. Price (34th - 14:16).

Gabe Sprunger led the South Adams boys to the eighth grade title, finishing third in 11:15. Evan Liechty was sixth in 11:28 followed by Josh Ehr (10th - 11:46), Simon Sprunger (17th - 12:12) and Ben Heckard (21st - 12:19).

Garrett Krieg paced the East Jay team in 19th at 12:28. Jacob Heitkamp was 25th in 12:33 with Blake LeMaster (40th - 13:21), Joe Imel (42nd - 13:25) and Colby Cline (43rd - 13:28) rounding out the team score.

Bradley Leuthold took eighth to lead the Chief seventh grade boys with his time of 12:01. Behind him were Austin Bentz (13th - 12:12), Kyle Scott (21st - 12:57), Aaron Loy (26th - 13:19) and Seth Ainsworth (27th - 13:20).

Brayden Myers was the top South Adams runner in 18th at 12:46. Behind him were Cody Sprunger (31st - 13:34), Joel Hawbaker (35th - 13:43), Zach Yoder (50th - 14:25) and Brett Affolder (59th - 15:01).

Chance Fuller was first among the four West Jay runners in 22nd as he crossed the line in 13:01. He was followed by Dillon Friddle (55th - 14:37), Zach Johnson (66th - 15:48) and Lee Mock (73rd - 17:57).[[In-content Ad]]
