Jay County girls stay undefeated

MUNCIE — Maria Murphy and Ciera Barcus combined for a field-event sweep to lead the Patriots.
They each picked up two wins Tuesday as the Jay County High School girls track team clobbered the Muncie Central Bearcats 88-40 to remain undefeated. The boys team lost 78-52.
Murphy took the top spot in the shot put at 40 feet even and won the discus with a toss of 115 feet, 4 inches. Barcus cleared the bar at 5 feet to win the high jump and finished first in the long jump at 14 feet, 6½ inches.
Zane Shreve was the lone double winner for the Patriot boys, taking the 110-meter hurdles and the 300 hurdles.
Other wins for the JCHS girls (25-0) came from Malarie Houck, Tasya Smith, Eme Miller, Amber Huelskamp, Katie Snyder and Katie Simmons. Picking up victories for the boys were Andrew Eley, Cade Price and Tyler Back.

WARREN — Jay County struggled at Dogwood Glen Golf Course, but still came away with a 197-205 victory Tuesday over the host Southern Wells Raiders.
The Patriots’ score was 27 strokes off the season-best they shot Thursday at Portland Golf Club. They combined to play the 500-yard, par-5 seventh hole at 13-over-par.
Justen Keller had three pars and shot 45 to share medalist honors with Zack Leyman of the Raiders. Dylan Friddle had one par in his round of 48, and Evan Mathias finished with a 51.
Adam Alfont completed the team score with a 53, and Richie Carducci shot 56.
Mitchel Rigby finished with a 49 to lead the JCHS junior varsity team to a 213-256 victory.

Softball streak ends
HARTFORD CITY — The Patriots’ four-game winning streak came to an end with a 14-11 loss Tuesday to the host Blackford Bruins.
Jay County’s Chelsea Tighe tied the game with a  three-run triple in the top of the seventh inning, but the Bruins responded with a three-run home run to end the game in walk-off fashion.
Abbey Vance took the loss for JCHS (12-7), giving up five runs — three earned — on six hits in 3 2/3 innings of relief. Nikka Chaney allowed nine runs — five earned — on eight hits and four walks in 3 1/3 innings.
Tighe went 3-for-4 with two triples, three RBIs and two runs, and Catherine Dunn added three hits, including a pair of doubles, one RBI and one run. Katlin Petro had two hits, two runs and two RBIs.

JV baseball wins
Jay County put together a couple of comebacks Tuesday to knock off the visiting Eastbrook Panthers 5-4.
The Patriots trailed 2-0 in the third inning before pulling even, and then fell behind again 4-2. They scored once in the bottom of the fourth inning and twice in the fifth for the victory.
Wes Hibbard tossed three scoreless innings to earn the win. He struck out two batters and walked three.
Zach Pryor and Nick Clemens each had a triple and two runs, and Josh Lykins added a hit, a run and an RBI.[[In-content Ad]]
