Jay County girls tie record

CENTERVILLE — The Patriot girls tied a record while the boys extended their winning streak.
Jay County High School’s girls swim team matched the record for wins in a season it set last year, picking up its 13th victory Thursday by a 108-73 score over the Centerville Bulldogs. The boys team won its seventh consecutive meet, 103-63.
Laci Hall (167.15 points) and Sammi Compton took first and second place in diving as the JCHS girls improved to 13-1. The team will have a chance to break school record for victories when it hosts Blackford on Tuesday.
James Keen was the lone double winner for the Patriot boys (7-5) as he took first place in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:56.88 and the 100 backstroke in 1:00.92. Cody White won the 500 freestyle in 5:36.31, Shelby Wendel posted a first-place time of 1:10.34 in the 100 breaststroke and Mitchel Rigby picked up an uncontested diving win with 162.7 points.
Also adding wins for the girls team were Caitlin Mark in the 200 freestyle in 2:17.54, Katy Smeltzer in the 100 backstroke in 1:10.85, Anne Vormohr in the 200 individual medley in 2:19.91 and Sophie Bader in the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.94.

Freshmen beat Broncos
DALEVILLE — Jay County’s freshman boys basketball team grabbed an early lead Thursday and rolled to a 22-10 victory over the Daleville Broncos.
Bowen Runyon finished with nine points for the Patriots, who were up 8-2 after the opening period. Kyler Carvel followed with seven points.

Eagles win pair
PARKER CITY — Three players scored in double figures Thursday as the West Jay Middle School eighth grade boys basketball team defeated the host Monroe Central Golden Bears 44-37. The seventh grade team picked up its 11th win, 26-23.
Justin Crouch set the pace with 12 points for the WJMS eighth graders, who are now 9-4. Spencer Calvert followed with 11 points, and Andrew Trewyn scored 10.
Connor Davis scored 13 points to lead the Eagle seventh grade squad, which improved to 11-2. Cole Stigleman added six points.
East Jay tops Jets
The East Jay wrestling team picked up six pins Thursday en route to a 62-28 victory over the visiting Adams Central Flying Jets.
Davis Anderson (80), Ivan Hemmelgarn (110), Brent Englehardt (115), Tyler Leonhard (152), Gaven Hare (160) and Jacob Ferguson (177). Kaimen Sanders (95) and Mitchel Frasher (105) picked up victories by major decisions with scores of 14-2 and 12-3 respectively.
Picking up exhibition wins were Brandon Resler, Jose Bermudez, Henry Hemmelgarn, Bryce Klarer, Thomas Hemmelgarn and Trevor Moeller.

WJMS girls win two
DUNKIRK — West Jay’s eighth grade girls basketball team pulled back to .500 Thursday as it won 27-25 at home Thursday over Cowan. The seventh grade squad rolled to a 38-10 win.
Samantha Back racked up 19 points to carry the Eagle eighth graders (5-5) to the victory. Kyndal Miller added six points.
Kaelyn Weaver tallied 10 points to lead the WJMS seventh grade team. Hanna Ault scored nine points.

Chiefs defeat SA
The East Jay eighth grade boys basketball team earned its 11th win Thursday, 34-22 over the visiting South Adams Starfires. The seventh grade team won 35-27.
Jay Houck finished with 10 points to lead the eighth grade Chiefs as they improved to 11-2. Dylan Martin scored six points.
Ethan Myers racked up 22 points to power the EJMS seventh graders (5-8). Collin Haines and Grant Keihn each added five points.[[In-content Ad]]
