Girls Basketball Roundup

PORTLAND — Kirk Comer’s former team proved to be no match for his current one.

Comer, coaching against the Union City Indians after five years leading them, watched his Jay County Patriots thump his former charges 55-27 Saturday. It was the second straight loss for Union City (2-2) and the seventh victory in a row for Jay County (7-1).

The Patriots left little up for debate in the contest, posting a shutout in the first quarter for a 13-0 lead. The advantage expanded to 19 points at halftime, and the defense remained strong throughout.

Jay County has held half of its opponents this year to 32 points or fewer, and hasn’t allowed any team to reach the 50-point plateau.

Sophomore Sara Garringer paced the Patriot effort with 16 points, 12 of which came in the first half. She added four assists, three steals and two rebounds.

Lisa Weitzel hit a pair of first-quarter 3-pointers and finished with eight points, and Renae Laux also scored eight points. Jamie Bruggeman and Leah Gasparovic each grabbed six boards.

Jay County also won the junior varsity contest 38-31 to remain unbeaten. Abby Loy scored nine points, and Katie Runyon and Whitney Homan each added eight points.

Stars lose again

BERNE — First-year coach Doug Beall is still looking for his first win as the South Adams girls basketball team remains mired in a losing streak. The Starfires lost for the 12th straight time, dropping to 0-5 this year with a 44-19 loss to the Heritage Patriots (4-2) Saturday.

The highest scoring quarter for South Adams came as it scored seven points in the third quarter. It went scoreless in the second quarter.

Erin McCollum and Julie Muhlenkamp shared the team high of just six points. Muhlenkamp added three steals, and Jessie Liechty had three rebounds.

Heritage’s Melissa Wills scored 14 points, and Lindsay Enkerline added 11.

Fort fades in fourth

FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery and Delphos St. Johns Blue Jays freshman girls basketball teams fought in a low-scoring battle for three quarters Saturday. St. Johns ceased to be low-scoring with a 15-point fourth-quarter while the Tribe couldn’t get the offense going in a 28-15 defeat.

Heather Schmackers scored five points to lead the Indians. Angie Wenning had four points and Jen Nietfeld added three.[[In-content Ad]]
