Jay County ranked 9th in baseball poll (05/15/07)

Jay County and Elwood split a double-header Saturday, then both teams jumped into the state poll.
Monday was a good day throughout for the Patriots, who were voted ninth in the Class 3A baseball poll by the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association. Jay County went on to crush the host Fort Wayne South Side Archers 11-1 in five innings.
The Patriots earned six points in the poll, which was just enough to put them in ninth place. They are one point ahead of Elwood (16-4), Andrean (15-7) and Mount Vernon (14-4), which all tied for 10th with five points.
Norwell (21-0) remained a unanimous No. 1 with 60 points.
Jay County, which is now 16-4, has reached double digit runs in 13 of its victories, 11 of which have come by the mercy rule.
Thomas McCowan powered the Patriot offense against South Side, which posted four runs in the third inning and six more in the fifth to end the game. He ripped a pair of doubles and finished with two runs and two RBIs.
Tony McCowan had two hits and three RBIs, and Rhett Retter scored twice and stole three bases. Luke Goetz drove in a pair of runs, and Andy Hughes also had two hits.
Michael Jobe improved his record to 7-1 with the victory. He allowed just one run on three hits and a walk while striking out six batters.
Junior varsity
Jay County scored in each of the first five innings as it rolled to a 12-5 victory over the visiting Wapahani Raiders.
The Patriots (12-3) took control with five runs in the opening inning and never trailed. Phil Powell went a perfect 4-for-4 with a double and two runs to lead JCHS.
Tyler Freyburgher finished 3-for-3 with two runs, and Willie Mayfield was 2-for-2 with three runs. Colton Lombardo and Mike Daniels also added doubles in the victory.
Daniels was the winning pitcher, allowing five runs - three earned - on six hits and five walks. He struck out three batters as he went the distance.[[In-content Ad]]
