Jay County ranked ninth in AP poll (11/28/06)

INDIANAPOLIS - It took just one game for the voters to give Jay County an extra push.

The Patriot boys basketball team, coming off a state runner-up finish in 2006, was voted 11th by The Associated Press in its Class 3A preseason poll. After the first week of games, it broke into the top 10.

Jay County, which defeated Elwood 57-37 in its season opener Wednesday, is ranked ninth this week with 68 points. Evansville Mater Dei was eighth with 76 points, and Edgewood was 10th with 37.

New Castle, the 2006 Class 3A state champion, remained No. 1 with nine of 11 first place votes and 212 points. Evansville Bosse was second, followed by Batesville in third.

The Patriots were never ranked last season before making their run to the state championship game.

Top-ranked teams in the other classes were Indianapolis North Central in Class 4A, Forest Park in Class 2A and Barr-Reeve in Class 1A.

Fort girls stomp 'Riders

ST. MARYS, Ohio - Fort Recovery's girls showed why they are expected to be one of the top team's in Ohio's Division IV, rolling over the St. Marys Memorial Roughriders 48-22 Saturday.

Sara Fortkamp reached double figures with 10 points, and Vicki Roessner, Tiff Gaerke and Joanna Snyder each added eight for the Tribe, which led 15-6 after the opening period.

The Indians limited St. Marys to just 16 percent shooting for the game.

Gaerke grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds, and Holly Stein and Abby Niekamp each had five boards.

Emily Shellabarger paced the Roughriders with seven points and nine rebounds.

Fort Recovery also won the junior varsity game 46-21 behind 15 points from Chelsey Leuthold and 14 from Nicole Pott-kotter.

Tigers top SA girls

BLUFFTON - The South Adams girls struggled to score in the first half, falling behind 39-13 on the way to a 67-40 defeat Friday to the Bluffton Tigers.

Senior Kayla Coblentz had nine points, nine rebounds, six assists and four steals in the defeat. Andrea Moser had 13 points and six rebounds, and Ashton Morgan scored six points.

Marah Kyle carried Bluffton with 30 points, including 13 in the second quarter. Haleigh Osborne added 15 points.

Karen Bollenbacher and Tara Beitler each had seven points as the Starfire junior varsity won 24-19.

JC freshmen rally again

For the second time in three games the Patriots sputtered offensively in the opening half before rallying after the break.

Jay County's freshman girls trailed 6-2 at halftime, but scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to take a 25-18 victory Monday over the Eastbrook Panthers. The team also scored just three first-half points in its opening win over Bellmont.

Kayla Phillips paced the Patriots (2-1) with six points, and Shelby Gierhart added five points and four rebounds.

Kayla Davis scored five points, and Brittany Muhlenkamp had four points and four boards.

Tigers edge FR freshmen

FORT RECOVERY - The Fort Recovery freshman girls led by six at the half, but gave up 14 third-quarter points Saturday in a 29-28 loss to the Versailles Tigers.

The Indians were up 15-9 at the half, but got outscored 14-7 in the third quarter to fall behind. Emily May paced Fort Recovery with nine points, and Kelsey Brockman scored seven.

EJ girls split with Driver

WINCHESTER - East Jay Middle School's girls teams split a pair of games Monday against Winchester Driver. The seventh graders scored a 29-16 victory while the eighth grade team lost 30-23.

Mariah Horniday paced the seventh graders with 10 points. Maria Murphy added six points, and Whitni Somers scored five.

Brittany Manor had seven points to lead the eighth graders. Katie Butcher followed with five points.[[In-content Ad]]
