Jay County scores first back-to-back wins (04/29/03)

Local Roundup

Since being no-hit in back-to-back games, the Jay County softball team has bounced back nicely. The Patriots rallied for a win against the Marion in the second game of a double-header Saturday, and won back-to-back games for the first time with a 10-8 win over Muncie Southside Monday.

The victory avenged an earlier loss to the Rebels, and improved the team’s record in the conference to 2-3. They are 5-8 overall, matching the win total produced by Jay County last season.

The Patriots trailed 5-0, allowing all those runs in the bottom of the second inning before getting on the board in the fourth. They eventually took an 8-5 lead with five sixth-inning runs only to have Muncie Southside tied the game in the bottom of the frame.

Still, Jay County jumped back on top with two runs in the top of the seventh and held the Rebels scoreless for the OAC win.

Felisha Parr picked up three hits for the Patriots in the contest. She also scored twice and had a pair of stolen bases. Saffron Redwine and Jenni Chittum each had two hits and two runs, and Renae Laux and Ashley Cook each had a hit and two RBIs.

Cook (2-2) earned the victory, allowing eight runs — four earned — on eight hits. She struck out two and walked eight.

Jay County’s next game is Wednesday when it hosts Huntington North at 4:30 p.m.

Patriot golfers split

The Jay County golf team picked up its second win of the season Monday, but also suffered another loss in a three-way meet against Winchester and Monroe Central.

Winchester narrowly got back the Patriots for the top score in the meet, finishing 165-167. Monroe Central was third with a 178.

Tyler Johnston shot by far his low score of the year to lead the Patriots (2-3) and tie Winchester’s Jason Brouse for match medalist honors. They finished with matching scores of 38.

Adam Foster was next for Jay County with a 42, Jesse Shawver shot a 43, and Alex Hunt had a 44. Josh Hall rounded out the day for the Patriots with a 49.

Jay County plays at Adams Central today at 4:30 p.m.

Jay slips to fifth

The Jay County baseball team’s loss to Norwell didn’t drop it too much in the state poll.

The Patriots (9-1) suffered their only loss of the season last week 10-0 to Norwell, but remained among the top ten teams in this week’s Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association poll. They earned 23 points in the voting, placing them fifth, eight points behind Vincennes (9-1) and just one point ahead of Hammond Clark (8-1).

Indianapolis Roncalli (12-0) remained atop the poll, with new Palestine second (10-0) and Andrean third (10-1).

Jay County will visit Union City today at 4:30 p.m.

Starfires fall short

South Adams record hasn’t been impressive this season in baseball, but the Starfires sure gave Bellmont a scare Monday. They pushed the Braves — ranked third in last week’s 3A poll before dropping out this week — and nearly pushed the contest to extra innings before falling to a 3-2 defeat.

Bellmont (8-2) jumped on top quickly with three runs in the top of the first inning, but did not score again. South Adams responded with a run in the third inning and one in the sixth, but couldn’t tie the game.

Jeremiah Kaeser took the loss in just one inning of work, allowing three runs — two earned. Aaron Givens pitched six scoreless innings to end the game, allowing four hits while striking out four and walking two.

Kyle Neuenschwander and Doug Roop pushed across the runs for the Starfires, each finishing with a double and an RBI. Kyle White and Zane Martens each scored a run.

South Adams’ next game is at Adams Central today at 4:30 p.m.

JC tennis loses third straight

Jay County’s tennis team had a chance to avoid a third straight defeat, but lost a pair of three-set matches in a 3-2 loss to South Adams Monday.

The Patriots (3-5) picked up a pair of fairly quick wins at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles, while South Adams took the victory at No. 3 singles. That left Kristen Klatt battling Michelle Dubach at No. 1 singles and Erin St. Myers and Julie Sours taking on Mindy Rohrer and Katie Sprunger at No. 1 doubles with the match hanging in the balance.

Rohrer and Sprunger took care of their business for the Starfires, topping St. Myers and Sours 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 to even the match. Dubach finished the job for South Adams, holding off Klatt for a 7-5, 1-6, 7-5 win.

Alyssa Miller scored the other victory for the Starfires against Brittany Pinkerton 6-3, 6-1.

Erin Schmiesing and Whitney Schemenaur rolled easily over Renee Rybolt and Erica Steiner 6-3, 6-1. Kelly Hess had the other win for the Patriots with a 6-0, 7-6 (7-1) win over Karlyn Bauman.

South Adams also won the junior varsity match 4-3.

Stephanie Homan had the only singles win for Jay County, defeating Kathy Steiner 8-4.

Niki Guntle and Brianne Morrical topped Belinda Rigby and Nadine Schultz 8-2 at No. 1 doubles, and Angie Stults and Shonda Sutton topped Pia Wendorff and Emily Cook 8-3 at No. 2 doubles.
