Jay County struggles in ECIC (12/29/03)

Local Roundup

Jay County had a rough day as it hosted the East Central Indiana Classic Saturday, as just one wrestler made a run at a title.

Senior heavyweight Tyler Bash was the lone Patriot to finish in the top six as the team finished 14th in the 16-team field with 64.5 points.

Yorktown had three individual champions and won the event with 222 points. Bluffton also won three individual titles and placed second with 156 points, and Winchester was third with 153 points.

Bash had by far the best day for Jay County placing second in the heavyweight division. He won each of his first three matches before falling in the championship to Chuck Robinson of Zionsville.

Jared Myers (112) was 2-2 on the day and finished seventh.

Kurtis Hess (140) was 1-1 in eighth place, and Justin Adams (152) and Robert Ralston (160) also finished in eight place with 1-3 records. Trent Bash went 2-2 and placed 10th at 145 pounds.

The Patriots will get some time off before returning to the mat at the Adams Central Invitational Saturday, Jan. 10 at 9 a.m.

Fort falters in 1st

The Fort Recovery boys basketball team had another slow start and couldn’t recover in a 71-54 loss to the Ansonia Tigers Saturday.

The Tribe (3-4) fell behind 22-7 after the first period. It pulled within 10 points heading into the first quarter, only to allow 21 points in the final period in the defeat.

The Indians struggled to put the ball in the basket, hitting just 34 percent of their field goal attempts in the game.

John Bihn and C.J. Tobe had the best shooting days, with Bihn going 5-for-10 for a team-high 14 points. Tobe went 4-of-5 on 3-pointers for 12 points.

Ryan Staugler added 11 points, and Bihn also grabbed 18 rebounds.

Jason Barga had 21 points and 11 rebounds as Ansonia shot 58 percent in the first half on the way to a 46-percent effort in the game. Jack Steinke had 26 points and nine rebounds, and Greg Wentworth chipped in 12 points and six steals.

Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team also lost to the Tigers Saturday, 40-38.

The Indians coughed up a five-point lead as they were outscored 15-4 in the second quarter. The game remained close in the second half, but the Indians’ 30-percent shooting from the field was not enough to pull off a victory.

Todd Post and Tyler Thobe shared a team-high for the Tribe with 12 points apiece. Trent Brunswick had 14 rebounds, and Aaron Kahlig notched four assists and three steals.

J.P. Beckley had 15 points for Ansonia, and Brent Lavy added 12. Andy Howdieshell had seven rebounds and four steals.

Sarah Miller was sixth individually and teamed with Ada Bebi for Jay County’s sixth-place finish in the team competition at the Elite Diving Invitational an Indianapolis Ben Davis Saturday.

Miller scored a 313.70 to take sixth, but was nearly 100 points off the pace. Brittney Feldman of Indianapolis Broad Ripple was first with 410 points.

Bebi placed 14th for Jay County with 136.65.

In the boys competition Matt Peterson finished 17th with 228.21 points. Todd McCowan was 19th at 146.50.

The Patriot swimmers will return to action Thursday, Jan. 8 at Bellmont at 5:30 p.m.
