BERNE — The South Adams Starfires had every opportunity to extend its three-match winnings streak Tuesday. Jay County took advantage of their mistakes and had just enough at the end of games to stop that possibility.
The Patriots pulled out tight first and second games and scored a ridiculous 17 aces in a 23-21, 21-18, 24-25, 21-15 victory over South Adams in volleyball action Tuesday. The loss for the Starfires came a night after rallying for a victory from a two game deficit against perennial state contender Fort Wayne Bishop Luers, which is currently 13th in the Class 3A poll voting.
“I was a afraid we’d have a letdown tonight,” said a disappointed Terri Rhoades, coach of South Adams. “I hoped they’d prove me wrong.
“We just played unconscious last night. This was not the team that showed up last night.”
South Adams (6-9) had the chance to put the Patriots in a hole early, leading 20-18 in the first game after a pair of kills from Kelly Mertz. But, Shannon O’Dell saved the game-point try with a kill of her own, and the Starfires self destructed.
Becki Beeler scored back-to-back aces off the arms of seniors Mertz and LeeAnn Snyder before a Mertz kill tied the game again at 21. Jay County scored the next two points, one on an attack error by Renee Neuenschwander and the game-winner with an Erin St. Myers kill.
The Starfires had difficulty getting the ball to Mertz, who finished with a match-high 16 kills, on the final two points.
Game two was another close one, with Jay County leading by a small margin most of the way. Again it was O’Dell and St. Myers scoring kills for the final two points and a two-game lead.
Remembering the night before, South Adams won the third game despite blowing a 20-18 lead. The Starfires even fell to a 24-23 deficit before getting back-to-back kills from Robyn Habegger to keep the match going.
“They had us almost beaten in game one,” said Jay County coach Fred Medler. “They had us down. The game that we lost was close. I think that’s all part of the growth factor.”
The Patriots (8-12) weren’t going to allow the comeback as they continued to attack the weakness they found in the third game. After five game-three aces, Jay County scored five more in game four, especially attacking Robyn Habegger.
Three of the Patriots’ aces — two by Erin St. Myers and one by Ashley Overla — came as they built a 7-2 lead. They would never trail again in what would be the final game, and Beeler finished the match with a short serve that had the Starfires scrambling unsuccessfully as it fell for yet another ace.
Sara Hough finished with a team-best five aces, while Beeler and St. Myers each had two.
“The kids did that,” said Medler. “We didn’t tell them what the weakness was. We’re starting to understand some things.”
“That’s been our problem the whole year,” said Rhoades. “We’ve had problems with serve receive. We can dig really well, but that’s all reaction. With serve receive we just have too much time to think.”
South Adams’ inability to pass kept it from being able to consistently get the ball to its hitters — mainly Mertz. The Starfires sent over free ball after free ball, and Jay County parlayed them into a victory.
Habegger finished behind Mertz with 12 kills. Snyder had 16 digs and four blocks, Alyssa Miller dished out 34 assists, and Renee Neuenschwander had four aces.
Jay County spread its offense around, with Hough still leading the way with 10 kills. She also had 33 digs.
O’Dell had eight kills in her best match of the season. She also had a string of three straight blocks — all on Mertz — during a key stretch of the fourth game in which the Patriots extended a one-point lead to 11-6.
Overla also had eight kills, Beeler put away seven, and St. Myers had six. Beeler scored 14 points, St. Myers followed with 11, and Sarah Ainsworth had 32 assists.
“O’Dell had a great match. She had three blocks in the fourth game that kind of took the wind out of them.”
Jay County has another tough match today at Class 2A No. 4 Adams Central at 6 p.m., and South Adams visits Winchester Thursday at 6 p.m.
Junior varsity
The Patriots pulled out a close second game to finish a 21-17, 22-20 victory over South Adams in a sloppy match on both sides of the net.
Jay County had 15 aces in the match — four each by Miranda Tingley, Jamie Walker and Julie Sours — and the Starfires had nearly as many. Appropriately, the Patriots took a 21-20 lead in the second game on a service error by Sami Keen and ended it on a Sours ace.
Sours and Walker shared a team-high with five points apiece. Sours also had seven kills and five digs.
Walker finished with three kills, Erica McIntire had six digs, and Tingley passed out nine assists.
Freshmen
Jay County had to rally from behind to win the freshman match against South Adams 9-21, 21-17, 21-19.
Amber Cotherman served 10 points for the Patriots (3-1), and Ashley Horn scored five points. They each had a pair of aces, as did Erica Clark and Lacey VanSkyock.
Maria Miller slammed three kills, and Clark had two. Clark also notched three assists, and Miller had a trio of blocks.[[In-content Ad]]
