RICHMOND — After a disappointing loss last week to Bellmont, the Jay County girls track team bounced back in a big way Tuesday.
The Patriots won nine events in all, including two of three relays, to knock off the host Richmond Red Devils 76-56. They improved to 3-1 with the win.
The boys team picked up six victories, but dropped a 71-51 decision to Richmond.
It was a balanced effort for the girls team, which had seven different athletes each contribute one individual win. It was dominant in the field events, sweeping both the shot put and the discus led by Jennifer McKinley and Sara Garringer.
McKinley took first in the shot put with a launch of 27 feet,3/4 inches. Garringer was second at 26 feet, 11 inches.
Garringer grabbed her victory in the discus with a toss of 78 feet, eight inches. McKinley was second at 78 feet, four inches.
Lacey Thornburg finished in third place in both events.
Senior Jessica Heitkamp also led a sweep in the 200-meter dash. She was first in 29.1 seconds, Sarah Mescher followed in 29.5 and Tequila Guntle was third.
Freshman Amanda Johnson paced a one-two finish in the 400 run in 1-minute, 5.9 seconds, with Guntle next just a half-second back.
Alyssa Johnson dominated the 3,200 run by 40 seconds, finishing in 12:10, and Jill Roughia was first in the 800 run in 2:38. Erika Hunt added the other Patriot victory, winning the high jump at four feet, 10 inches.
The Patriots were also first in the 4x400 and 4x800 relays.
Junior Joseph Vormohr carried the boys team, leading one-two finishes as he earned half of the Patriots’ individual victories.
Vormohr easily won both throwing events. He was first in the shot put at 46 feet, 10 inches and the discus at 133 feet, one inch.
Fellow junior Steven Castillo was second in both events at 41 feet, one inch and 117 feet, six inches respectively.
Junior Justin Gilbert managed a victory in a very close 100 dash. He finished just eight hundredths ahead of Richmond’s Kyle Shipley in a time of 11.7.
Senior Mark Kelly picked up the other individual win for the Patriots with a leap of 19 feet, seven inches in the long jump.
