The opening ceremonies in Athens aren’t until Friday, but the Olympics started today for Jay County’s Stephanie Arnold and her teammates.

Arnold placed 36th out of 64 competitors in today’s women’s archery ranking round, which determines the seeding pattern for Sunday’s first round of elimination matches. She scored 623 points at the Dekelia Archery Training Complex, and will match up against No. 29 seed Melissa Jennison of Australia (628) in the opening round at Panathinaiko Stadium.

“Overall, I felt really good about my performance,” said Arnold in a press release from USA Archery. “My only expectation coming into the ranking round was to shoot and not worry about the score. There’s no elimination today ... I had a few not-so-great arrows, but I was able to recoup and come back strong.”

Arnold was second among the U.S. competitors. Jennifer Nichols led the team as she placed 19th with 638 points, while Janet Dykman finished 44th with 619.

The total score of 1,880 ranks the U.S. squad ninth for the team competition, which begins Friday, Aug. 20.

They and everyone else in the field trail the Koreans, who look poised for their second straight medal sweep and sixth straight team title. Sung Hyun Park, Sung Jin Lee and Mi Jin Yun finished one-two-three in the ranking round, with Park turning in a world-record effort with 682 points.
