Local Roundup
The Jay County Summer Swim Team improved to 2-0 Tuesday with an 870-192 destruction of North Adams Central.
Jay County won all 20 relays and took first place in 49 out of the 60 individual events. It was especially dominant in the 9-10-year old boys division with Lucas Holcomb and Wiley Young each winning three events, and Alysha Miller and Michelle Landfair doing the same for the 11-12-year-old girls.
Holcomb earned his victories in the long freestyle, backstroke and short freestyle. Young won the butterfly, individual medley and breaststroke.
Miller and Landfair mirrored those victories. Miller was first in the long freestyle, backstroke and short freestyle, with Landfair winning the butterfly, individual medley and breaststroke.
Derrick Lee and Ashley Imel added six more wins in the 15-and-older division. Lee took the boys long freestyle, individual medley and short freestyle, and Imel won the girls butterfly, individual medley and short freestyle.
Zane Shreve also earned three wins in the 8-and-younger boys division as he was first in the long freestyle, individual medley and breaststroke.
Adding two wins apiece were Sophie Bader, Levi Hummel, Emilee Miller, Mary Hudson and Cori Vormohr.
Portland tops Mariners
Matt Cannizzo provided a key two-run home run as the Portland Rockets defeated the Grand Lake Mariners 10-6 Tuesday in Celina.
Cannizzo’s blast powered a quick start by the Rockets. They jumped to a 7-0 lead in the first two innings, with Tommy Pearce and Kurt Rammel also driving in runs.
Pearce and Rammel each finished with two hits, and Brenda Cooley added three in the contest.
South Adams graduate Matt Ousley earned the win, with Kyle Heyne and Jay County graduate Pete Byrum each pitching in relief. Byrum had a good first start for the Richmond Roosters, but was released after giving up six runs on four hits in two innings in his second outing Saturday.
Rockets’ Hale chosen
Mike Hale, who has pitched for three season with the Portland Rockets, was drafted by the New York Yankees Tuesday. The pitcher was taken in the 35th round of the Major League Baseball draft.
An Olympic Athletic Conference player was also drafted this week. Former Anderson Highland first baseman Adam Lind, currently of South Alabama, was taken in the third round — 83rd overall — by the Toronto Blue Jays.
Hale spent his collegiate career at Ball State, finishing 2-2 with a 1.93 ERA in 21 relief appearances this year. He struck out 35 batters and walked 13 in 371/3 innings.
Softball camp
Jay County High School will host a softball camp for first through eighth graders June 23 through 25.
The cost of the camp, which will be run by JCHS softball coach Jack Wood and his staff and players, is $25. The deadline to register is Monday, June 14.
