Jay crushes Owls to remain perfect (05/19/04)

Jay County Roundup

Jay County bounced back from its fourth-place finish in the Olympic Athletic Conference golf meet Monday to trounce Muncie Burris Tuesday. The Patriots stayed perfect in dual meets by crushing the Owls 150-192.

Jesse Shawver, who shot an 84 at the OAC meet, rebounded for a career-best 34 against Burris. The team’s only senior led off with a par and then racked up five birdies on the back nine at Cardinal Hills Golf Course.

He posted birdies on holes 11, 13, 14, 17 and 18 en-route to leading the Patriots.

Alex Hunt birdied two of the three holes Shawver didn’t, playing one-under on the 10th and 12th. He added six pars for a 36.

Tyler Johnston had a pair of birdies, and Adam Foster added one as they joined Nathan McClung and Ben Freeman in shooting 40. Every Jay County player scored lower than the top Burris player, Kyle Bell, who finished with a 42.

The Patriots (10-0) will now take a week off before visiting Randolph Southern Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

Jay moves closer

The Jay County baseball team is one step away from forging a four-way tie for the Olympic Athletic Conference title after trouncing the Muncie Southside Rebels 10-0 Tuesday.

The Patriots are now 12-8 overall and 4-3 in the OAC, one-half game behind Huntington North, Anderson Highland and Connersville. They can pull even at 5-3 with a victory at Muncie Southside today at 4:30 p.m.

Jay County jumped ahead quickly Tuesday as Heath Williams led off the game with a walk. After ground outs by Trent Bailey and Chad Keen, Mike Smith delivered a two-out, two-run home run.

The Patriots scored a run in the third inning, four in the fourth and three in the fifth to put the game away.

Smith finished 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, and Williams had a triple, three runs and one RBI. Mike Alberson scored twice, and Adam Brandt had a couple of RBIs.

Keen silenced the Southside swingers as he tossed five scoreless innings. He struck out nine batters and allowed just two hits and three walks.
