Jay defeats cold-shooting Indians (02/03/04)
JCHS girls basketball
UNION CITY — The first half was a festival of turnovers and fouls. When the visiting Patriots kept Union City off the foul line in the second half they pulled away for a comfortable win.
Jay County’s girls basketball team broke the game wide open in the third quarter, building a 20-point lead before finishing with a 50-35 victory over the Union City Indians.
The home team scored more than half of its points (19) from the foul line, and made just seven field goals in the contest. It was ice cold in the second half, going 2-for-18 (11 percent) from the field on the way to a 20 percent shooting night.
“At halftime we talked about not giving them free throws,” said Jay County coach Lea Selvey. “We wanted to quit reaching, move our feet and keep them off the free throw line.
“We played good team defense. It was just a good team effort.”
Leah Gasparovic, who finished with eight points and four rebounds, said the Patriots were able to pull away because they took control of the tempo in the second half.
“We started (keeping them) away from the foul line in the third quarter,” she said. “We could play at our speed.
“I thought our intensity was up a lot more than it has been. We were playing as a team. I think we’re playing really hard.”
Jay County (10-7) led 31-22 after a stop-and-go first half which saw 24 fouls and 24 turnovers between the two teams. The Patriots finished off Union City (12-6) in the third quarter.
Saffron Redwine opened the second half with a 3-pointer, and Jamie Bruggeman followed with a lay-up and a free throw for another 3-point play. The 6-0 run put Jay County up 37-22, and Union City never pulled closer than 14 points during the rest of the contest.
Bruggeman had one of her best offensive games of the year for the Patriots, finishing with a game-high 16 points. She went 6-of-10 from the field and made two of her three 3-point tries while also grabbing two rebounds and dishing out one assist.
She led a 50-percent shooting effort for the Patriots as they went 17-of-34 from the field and 4-of-6 from 3-point range.
“My teammates were looking for me and my shot was on,” said Bruggeman. “I was looking to score.
“We played together as a team. We had confidence in each other and ourselves, and everything came together tonight.”
Bruggeman’s effort was aided by scoring across the board for the Patriots. Gasparovic went 3-for-5 from the field and 2-for-2 from the line for her eight points, and Felisha Parr followed with seven.
Markie Runyon had five points and six rebounds, and Lindsay Friddle finished with five points and five boards.
“We got some really good minutes from kids off the bench,” said Selvey. “Leah (Gasparovic) played well, and I thought Saffron (Redwine) really came in and gave us a spark on defense.”
Toni Lenkensdofer was the only Union City player to reach double figures as the Indians struggled mightily on the offensive end. She did most of her damage at the foul line — 7-of-10 — as she scored 11 points.
Lenkensdofer also grabbed 11 rebounds.
Allie Doppler followed with six points and five rebounds. Jill Threewits had a pair of assists.
Jay County will visit the Delta Eagles — a potential sectional semifinal opponent — Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. But, Selvey said the sectional is not on his mind just yet as he remembers his team’s 78-42 loss at home to the Eagles a year ago.
“Delta came in and embarrassed us last year,” he said. “We’re not even thinking sectional right now. We’re thinking ‘beat Delta.’ Hopefully we can win and then go on and play Connersville well.”
Junior varsity
The offense was slow starting, but the Jay County junior varsity team improved to 14-1 with a 38-26 victory over Union City Monday.
Both teams scored just two points in the first quarter, but the Patriots came alive in the second and third. They took an 18-8 lead at the half and added 17 more points in the third quarter to pull away.
Whitney Homan set the pace as the lone Jay County player in double figures with 10 points. Miranda Betz had eight points, and Theresa Reinhart finished with six.
