Jay defeats Devils

Local roundup

The Patriots’ schedule Thursday showed the No. 2 team in the state. And they still came away with a victory.
The second-ranked Richmond Red Devils brought a mostly junior varsity team — they were minus their top four players, including 2008 state champion Trisha Witherby — to Portland Golf Club and Jay County handed them a 192-212 defeat.
Although Richmond’s best players were not in action, the Patriots’ No. 1 golfer was in top form.
Senior Abby Denney caught fire from the opening tee, recording pars on each of the first four holes. She moved to 1-under-par with a birdie on the 349-yard, par-5 fifth hole at PGC and parred the final two holes to match her career-best score of 39.
Aubrey Mills and Jessica Cordell, the only Richmond players who had previous varsity action this year, shot 48 and 52 respectively.
Cara Garringer added three pars and four bogeys on the way to a 45 for JCHS (5-1), and Brittany Stevens had a par and three bogeys for a 52. Alysia Fennig and Macey Gerber each finished at 56.

Bellmont tops SA
BERNE — The Bellmont Squaws, ranked third in Class 3A, handed the South Adams volleyball team a 25-11, 25-16, 25-11 loss Thursday.
Chelsea Bollenbacher had six digs and five kills in the loss. Alyssa Bluhm finished with seven assists and four kills for the Starfires (2-8).
Jody Potts totaled five assists as the SAHS junior varsity team fell 25-11, 25-11. Bellmont also took the freshman match, 25-13, 25-5.

Giants defeat Jay
MARION — Two in a row was not to be for the Patriots.
Jay County’s girls soccer team earned its first win of the year Tuesday over Connersville, but the Marion Giants overpowered the squad 5-1 Thursday.
The Patriots (1-3) fell behind early and managed just four shots on goal in the game. Their lone score came with 19:36 remaining when sophomore Sammi Compton found the net off of an assist from senior Mallory Poole.
Compton took three of the JCHS shots on goal, and Poole had the other. Mollie May finished with 14 saves.
Jay County dropped the junior varsity game 8-0 with the lone shot on goal coming from Ericka Reynolds.

Fort earns split
FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery seventh grade football team defeated the St. Henry Redskins 14-6 Thursday while the eighth graders lost 24-6.
Wes Wenning scored on an 18-yard run and added the 2-point conversion in the first quarter for the seventh graders. Kyle Schroer added a 12-yard TD run in the second quarter.
Cole Wendel had the lone score for the eighth grade team on a 15-yard pass from Mitch Stammen in the second quarter.[[In-content Ad]]
