Jay drops opener to South Adams

BERNE — The Jay County Summer Swim Team dropped its opening meet of the season, falling 646-588 Thursday to host South Adams.
Jay County dominate the 15-and-older division, with Josh Lykins winning the boys butterfly, individual medley and short freestyle and Katy Smeltzer taking the long freestyle, butterfly and short freestyle. Eme Miller added victories in the backstroke and individual medley.
Sisters Eliza and Mara Bader also turned in three victories apiece. Mara was first in the 8-and-younger butterfly, long freestyle and individual medley while Eliza took the 9-10-year-old butterfly, individual medley and backstroke.
Alex LeMaster earned victories in the 11-12-year-old boys short freestyle, long freestyle and breaststroke.
Also adding wins for Jay County were Ezekiel Corwin, Konner Sommers, Lillian Clemmons, Ashlyn Dow, Audrey Shreve, Daniel Ostrowski, Christopher McDowell, Sydney Mathias, Ashley Mark, Caitlin Mark and Alex Sutton.
Bentz, Trobridge lead
Tarron Bentz and Mitchel Trobridge each had big days at the plate Thursday to lead Williams Auto Parts to a 14-9 victory over J&P Plating in Portland Junior League Rookie baseball.
Bentz and Trobridge each went 4-for-4 with a double. Bentz had four runs and two RBIs while Trobridge notched four RBIs and a pair of runs.
Jacob Hart had three hits, two RBIs and a run for J&P.
In Thursday’s other Rookie game, Kenny Carducci finished with a double, a single, four RBIs and a run as Pak-A-Sak edged Ponderosa 8-7. Justin Hoover and Bryce Wenk each added two hits, two runs and an RBI.
Sam Myers had two hits, two runs and an RBI for Ponderosa.
Ohio adds events
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The OHSAA Board of Directors approved the addition of eight wheelchair events for its Track and Field State Championships.
The state will add wheelchair competitions for boys and girls in 100-, 400- and 800-meter races as well as the shot put. Those events will be added for the 2012 state finals.
Eight competitors in each event will qualify for the state meet based on qualifying times during the regular season. Athletes participating in the new events will compete for their schools and earn individual medals, but will not score points for their respective teams.[[In-content Ad]]
