UNION CITY - The Patriots dropped the first set in four out of five matches. But they came back for a pair of three-set wins to earn their first victory of the season.
Jay County High School's boys tennis team rallied at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles Monday to defeat the Union City Indians 3-2.
Austin Cowan and Jordan McBride turned in the lone straight-set win for the Patriots at No. 2 doubles. They cruised over Levi Thornburg and Ben Van Kamp 6-2, 6-1.
At No. 2 singles Brad Leuthold struggled through the first set. However, he rallied to win the second and dominated Adam Barga in the third to take a 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory.
All three sets were close at No. 1 doubles, where Chance Fuller and Seth Ainsworth dropped a first-set tiebreaker. They were able to bounce back as well, knocking off Jordan Loesch and Zack Holt 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 7-5 to secure the first JCHS win of the year.
Jared Valentine fell 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, and Tylor Smith lost 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.
Derek Smith, Shawn Homan and the team of Morton Garringer and Evan Ryder swept the junior varsity matches for Jay County, all winning by a score of 8-1.
Girls soccer falls
HUNTINGTON - The Jay County girls soccer team slipped to 0-2 Saturday with a 3-0 loss to the Huntington North Vikings.
The Patriots had four shots on goal in the game, three of which came from senior Loryn Horn. Sammi Compton, a freshman, added one.
Mollie May recorded 14 saves against the Vikings, who had a 1-0 lead at halftime. LeAnn Horn had one save.
JV, freshmen lose
Jay County's junior varsity football team suffered a 12-8 loss Monday to the visiting Delta Eagles.
The Patriot freshman team hosted Delta and fell 32-22.
Blake Crouch scored the lone touchdown for the JV squad with a 70-yard run. He added a 2-point conversion pass to Tyler Back.
Vance Guntle tossed a pair of TD passes for the JCHS freshman team, hitting Corey Bellis and Richie Keen for scores. Bellis also had a rushing touchdown and a 2-point conversion run.[[In-content Ad]]
