PARKER CITY — Day two didn’t go quite as well as day one for the Jay County girls golf team.
Despite Trisha Champ’s 42, the third-best score of the tournament, the Patriots shot 224 to finish last among the seven full teams at the Monroe Central Invitational Tuesday at Hickory Hills Golf Club.
Yorktown won the team title with a 177 as the event was shortened to nine holes because of the heat, and Muncie Central was a distant second at 196.
The results for Jay County represented a drop off from Monday’s 423 which placed it in the middle of the pack at the 14-team Richmond Invitational.
“(Monday) I was definitely pleased with how they started the season,” said Patriot coach Tom Ferguson. “Today I think they were hot and tired and it showed. But, overall I’m pleased with the way our season has taken off.”
Champ, who tied with four golfers for runner-up honors with an 81 at Richmond, got off to another solid start at Hickory Hills. She parred each of the first two holes and was just 3-over through six.
She played the No. 7 and 8 holes at 3-over, thanks mostly to a penalty stroke as her drive on No. 7 landed in a bush. But she came back strong.
The sophomore’s drive on the 278-yard, par-4 ninth hole landed perfectly on the right side of the fairway. She hit a great second shot from about 95 yards, landing the ball pin high and about six feet to the left of the hole. The birdie putt just missed, but she easily tapped in for her fifth par of the day.
Champ has now turned in nine-hole rounds of 41, 40 and 42 to start the year after averaging 47.38 last season.
“That’s tremendous,” said Tom Ferguson. “She’s making leaps and bounds quickly and I don’t think she realizes how quickly. She’s just hitting the ball so well right now that she expects it.”
Jay County’s other scores slipped back a bit after the team had four personal-bests for 18 holes Monday and shot nine-hole rounds of 214 and 209.
Miranda Denney stabilized after a rough first hole, scored one of her two bogeys on the 157-yard, par-3 second and finished with a 58 for the No. 2 score on the team.
Alissa McMillan had an up-and-down round, but was the only player other than Champ to notch a par as she played even on the 272-yard, par-4 fourth. She also mixed four bogeys with four “others” to finish with a 60.
Ashley Bunch had a pair of bogeys to round out the team score with a 64, and Rachel Osterholt shot 82 in the first meet of her career.[[In-content Ad]]
