Jay falls despite Kohler's finish (09/02/04)
JCHS girls golf
PORTLAND — Katey Kohler played better near the end of the Jay County girls golf team’s meet against Richmond Thursday. But, it was nothing compared to how she closed out her round Tuesday.
Kohler finished with back-to-back pars at Portland Country Club, scoring a career-best 49 as the Patriots fell just short of their first win of the year by a score of 203-206 against the Winchester Golden Falcons.
“It’s a great finish,” said Jay County coach Tom Ferguson of Kohler. “She struggled last week. She normally shoots around 60 and shot a 67 (Thursday against Richmond), and came back with a 49. That’s an amazing turnaround in just a few days.
“I’m totally pleased with the way she played. She’s putting up a lot more fives and fours and threes. ... She had a good clean round.”
Her first shot on the 119-yard, par-3 eighth hole was anything but clean as it dribbled softly off to the right of the tee box. But, her second shot couldn’t have been much better.
Kohler knocked her approach to within a couple feet of the hole. After waiting for the rest of her foursome to join her she easily finished the par.
“After the second shot (I was pretty confident),” said Kohler. “I was trying not to think I had it in the bag too soon.”
Jay County’s No. 3 player didn’t have any problem shots on No. 9, smacking her second one down the middle to within 30 yards of the green. Again her approach was about as good as can be expected as she left the ball pin-high and six feet to the left of the hole.
Again she waited for the rest of her group to join her, and then calmly rolled in her par putt on the 348-yard, par-4 ninth hole. She finished bogey-par-par for her 49, which is a career-best by three strokes.
She also had a bogey on the 290-yard, par-4 fourth hole. Her previous best was a 52 on the back nine at the Richmond Invitational this year.
“I was really proud,” Kohler said of her finish. “I parred both holes and it wasn’t really anything I expected. I just concentrated on each shot and did the best I could.
“It’s been my goal all season to get under 50.”
Freshman Trisha Champ let the Patriots with a 46, her third straight sub-50 round and eighth of the season.
Champ had a par on the eighth hole, her third of the day. She also played No. 4 and the 349-yard, par-4 fifth hole even.
She added bogeys on holes one, three and seven to edge Winchester No. 1 player Erin Friend (47) for match medalist honors.
“Trisha is solid,” said Ferguson. “She had two or three missed hits today, but she’s just a solid golfer. She could have easily shot 41 or 42 today. ... She’s going to be tough.”
The Golden Falcons pulled off the victory as Ashley Sandifar match Kohler with a 49, Sybill Short shot a 53 and Emily Ertel carded a 54.
Still, it was the best round of the year for Jay County as Shonda Sutton posted a 55 and Brianne Morrical took a 56. Alissa McMillan had a 60.
Morrical had bogeys on holes three, five and eight, and Sutton shot 1-over on the second and sixth.
The team’s previous best score was a 209 against Anderson Highland Aug. 16. Since then the Patriots had not scored below 215.
“I think they’re starting to get some confidence finally,” said Ferguson. “I think that’s the biggest thing.
“We worked really hard last week on just telling them how close they were to shooting some really good rounds. We could see the improvement, it’s just they just haven’t been able to put it together in a match. Their practice was good, so it was bound to happen. Finally tonight it did.”
The Patriots will try to build on Tuesday night’s success when they take on Bellmont and Monroe Central today at Grey Goose Golf Club in Decatur at 4:30 p.m.
Junior varsity
Jay County’s junior varsity team lost to Winchester by a 242-266 count.
Miranda Denney shot a 59 to lead Jay County, finishing two strokes back of JV medalists Courtney Riddle and Grace Wallace of the Golden Falcons. Ashley Bunch was one stroke behind Denney as she shot a personal-best 60.
Cindy Muhlenkamp came in with a 73, Britney Schlater had a 74 and Amanda Barnett scored a 76.[[In-content Ad]]
