After a couple of hours of tennis in gusting winds, the match came down to a tie-breaker. And the Bruins escaped with victory.
Jay County’s girls tennis team dropped its season opener Tuesday, falling 3-2 when Cassie Twibell and Ashley Armstrong of the Blackford Bruins edged Cindy Muhlenkamp and Heather Ayers 7-4 in a third-set tie-breaker.
The Patriots’ first individual victory of the season came from Carissa Wilkins with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Sarah Hatch at No. 3 singles. At No. 1 doubles Jessica Muhlenkamp and Megan Knittle defeated Amanda Bergdoll and Kara Peters 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 6-2.
Angie Stults and Megan Adams fell at No. 1 and 2 singles respectively, and Muhlenkamp and Ayers dropped the No. 2 doubles match 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4).
Tiffany Bickel, Caitlin Dunn and the teams of Betsy Knittle and Brittany Lewis and Megan Huntsman and Briann Saxman won junior varsity matches for a 4-2 Jay County victory.
SA baseball clobbers Falcons
BERNE — Winchester never had a chance Tuesday as the South Adams baseball team blasted three home runs in a 15-1, five-inning victory over the Falcons.
The Starfires (1-0) dominated from the No. 3 spot in the order, with Brent Newport blasting a two-run home run and Lukas Baumgartner going 3-for-3 with a home run, two runs and three RBIs. No. 5 hitter Mike Farris added the other homer as he went 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
Brent Habegger finished 3-for-3 with a triple, three runs and two RBIs for South Adams, which finished off the Falcons with seven runs in the fourth inning. Jordan Sharp was 2-for-3 with three runs, and Otis Mitchel and Will Grandlinard each drove in a pair of runs.
Justin Caffee struck out six and allowed just one hit in three innings for the win.
Fort softball blanked
HOUSTON, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s softball team managed just one hit Tuesday in a 10-0, five-inning loss to the Houston Wildcats. The Indians are 3-2 on the year.
Jodi Tobe was the Tribe’s only base-runner as she had a single. Houston scored four times in the second inning and finished the game with six runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Beth May took the defeat, allowing four runs — three earned — on four hits and six walks in 41/3 innings. Kinsey Wenning gave up six runs on six walks in one-third inning.[[In-content Ad]]
