PARKER CITY - The Patriots led by 13 points.

They were shooting 66 percent from the field.

And they were playing a team they had not lost to since 2000.

The 15th win of the Jay County High School boys basketball team's season seemed assured.

It wasn't.

The Patriots missed six straight shots while the host Monroe Central went on a 12-0 run with the aid of a technical foul. Charlie Miller's 3-pointer with 48 seconds remaining tied the game, and the Class 3A No. 9 Golden Bears went on to top JCHS 65-60 in overtime.

"We just did things that you can't do if you're a senior-dominated team," said Jay County coach Craig Teagle, whose team has won 15 games or more in each of the previous six seasons. "We were still up by 10 and I think we had 14 possessions (after that) and we turned it over six times."

Trey Dunn's put back to start the fourth quarter had the Patriots (14-6) ahead by 13 points and in command, but they scored just seven points over the course of the next 11 minutes, shooting 3-of-13 during the remainder of regulation and overtime. Trey Thomas started the Monroe Central comeback with one of his five 3-pointers, and on the ensuing possession Adam Garringer was called for a push as he tried for an offensive rebound.

Garringer was hit with a technical foul for his reaction to the call. Logan Thomas split the pair of free throws, but the Golden Bears (15-6) took advantage of the possession as Miller nailed a 3-pointer to trim the JCHS lead to six.

"That was huge," said Monroe Central coach Jeremy Duncan. "Any little thing like that obviously can turn the tide. I was really glad our kids took advantage of that."

The Golden Bears continued their run, getting five straight points from Landon Whitehead to pull within one before Billy Wellman finally ended a stretch of six straight Jay County misses. The Patriots remained ahead by three with a minute to play, but Miller nailed a step-back 3-pointer from the top of the key to even the score with 48 seconds to go.

JCHS held for the final shot, but Kyle Simmons was bumped on the drive and missed an off-balance effort from the lane. The Patriots had one more chance after grabbing the offensive rebound, but could not get a shot off on the final 0.8 seconds.

Monroe Central grabbed the lead in overtime on a Trey Thomas triple and never let it go as Logan Thomas hit 3-of-4 free throws in the final 15 seconds to seal the win.

"(The) technical killed us. You can't have that. That just breaks all your momentum," said Teagle, whose team was also called for a key technical against Muncie Southside. "That's twice this year I feel like we've been cost games because of our kids not being able to control themselves and have any discipline on the floor. ... I'm disappointed."

Miller and Trey Thomas were lights-out from long distance, going a combined 11-of-13. Miller's six 3-pointers led him to a game-high 22 points, and he also had five rebounds and three assists. Trey Thomas scored all of his 15 points from long distance.

Whitehead added 15 points and seven rebounds, and Logan Thomas totaled 11 points and three assists.

"We were down 13 at one point and we didn't get our heads down," said Duncan, whose team got outscored 18-8 in the third quarter before rallying in the fourth. "We stayed together and persevered and made a good run there at the end. We were lucky to make shots, and they missed some shots there at the end."

Monroe Central also outscored the Patriots 14-2 at the foul line, shooting four times as many free throws as the visitors.

Despite fighting an illness throughout the day, Eric Homan had a near-perfect night for JCHS. He shot 8-of-9 from the field with two 3-pointers as he finished with team highs of 15 points and seven rebounds.

Billy Wellman had 15 points and five boards, and Trey Dunn added eight points, five rebounds and three assists. Garringer totaled 12 points and four assists before going to the bench for good because of the technical.

"They won the basketball game because they played better and smarter than we did," said Teagle. "They out-played us. They deserved the victory. They did a nice job."

Junior varsity

Jay County dominated the first three quarters to finish the best season in school history with a 42-19 victory over the Golden Bears.

The Patriots built a 12-point lead at halftime and then outscored Monroe Central 19-7 in the third quarter. They finished the season 19-1 with the lone loss coming against Muncie Central.

Josh Beaty led JCHS with 11 points, and Brad Horn added nine. Drew Houck and Garrett Krieg each scored eight points.

Rhett Braun was the lone Golden Bear in double figures as he totaled 11 points. Trey West chipped in four points.
