Jay falls to top-ranked Cavs

COLDWATER, Ohio — The Patriots scored 53 runs in their previous three games.
They managed only two against the top-ranked Cavs on Thursday.
The Jay County High School baseball team scored a run in each of the first two innings but did not get on the board again in an 8-2 loss to the Division III No. 1 Coldwater Cavaliers.
Jay County fell behind 2-1 after the first and tied the game in the second, but the Cavaliers (16-1) plated two runs in the third and added four more in the fourth.
Toby McCallister had a double and scored a run for the Patriots (4-6), who also got a double from Levi Long. Kyle Selvey and Chandler Jacks each had a hit, and Jacks recorded the only RBI for the Jay County.
Chaz Carroll took the loss, striking out two and walking one. McCallister struck out a pair and walked one in relief of Carroll.

Jay golfers lose
MARION — A handful of bad holes kept the Jay County golf team at bay Thursday in its 188-195 loss to the Blackford Bruins at Club Run.
The Patriots were 10 or more over par on three holes, including the par-3 eighth (14-over) and par-4 ninth (13-over).
Evan Mathias led the Patriots with a 43, one stroke behind match medalist Blake Truery. Mathias had an eight on the par-4 first hole but recovered to par five holes and make three bogeys.
Jay Houck scored a 47 as the only other Patriot to break 50, making three pars and bogeying four holes. Zach Fullenkamp shot a 51 and Austin Wendel had a 54.
Graham Haines also competed for the Patriots, posting a score of 55.
Jay County’s junior varsity team beat Blackford, 222-226.
Sok Vormohr and Kyler Hudson both had scores of 53 to lead the Patriots, and Nick Hayden and John Crosbie each shot 58.

Lions thump Stars
LEO — The Starfire baseball team fell behind early Thursday and couldn’t claw their way back in a 15-5 loss to the Leo Lions in five innings.
South Adams scored two runs in the top of the first, but the Lions answered with seven in the home half of the frame. Leo scored four more in the second before the Starfires plated two runs in the third, cutting the Lions’ lead to 11-4.
Leo struck for three runs in the third, pushing its lead to 14-4, and both teams scored one run in the fifth.
Skylar Schoch had three hits and drove in a run for South Adams. Chandler Ingle smacked two singles and drove in a run, and Eric Pimentel also had an RBI single.
Collin Affolder had a double, and Jared Rife added a single.[[In-content Ad]]
