PORTLAND — Jay County managed to survive a furious Bellmont Squaws’ rally which almost cost the Patriots the first game. But they never truly recovered from the loss of momentum in 22-24, 21-16, 21-4, 21-11 defeat on Senior Night.

The Patriots (11-19) had a 20-14 lead in the first game, and had led by four or more points since a Becki Beeler service flurry put them up 13-7. Bellmont nearly stole the first game when Amanda Miller served seven straight points, actually giving the Squaws a 21-20 lead as Jay County missed on six chances to put it away.

But, senior Sara Hough came up big, ripping down kills on three of the final five points to snatch a 24-22 win back for the Patriots. However, they were never the same.

Jay County fell behind 16-12 in what started as a close second game, and would lead just once more in the match as Bellmont ran away with it.

“We couldn’t pass serve,” said Jay County coach Fred Medler, whose team gave up 11 aces in the match. “They got that one server that we were able to recover from (in game one). But that gave them confidence. In certain rotations they went for the jugular and we couldn’t stop the bleeding.

“Somebody has got to step up and make big time plays.”

For coach Casey Bailey’s Squaws, the end of the first game served as a spark. They found a fire that wasn’t kindled early on.

“We didn’t play well the first 20 points at all,” she said. “I told them ‘just play one point at a time and get some momentum flowing.’ That’s what we did.

“Confidence was up. Our girls at first were kind of playing as individuals, We came out more as a team at the end.”

After Miller had two aces in the first game, she added three in a row on her first service attempt of the second. Still, Jay County only trailed 6-5 at that point, and fought the Squaws to a tie at 12-12.

Then Bellmont (18-13) pulled ahead for good on a series of four service points by Jeni Wefel, two of which were scored on Patriot attack errors. When Megan Schamerloh brought down the hammer with a kill to end game two the momentum was firmly in the Squaws’ corner and stayed there.

Wefel had a service run of nine straight points to open an 11-1 lead for Bellmont in game three, thanks partially to a pair of huge blocks by Miller. Then Miller finished the game on her own with a run of seven consecutive points, getting two more aces, including the game-ender off the outstretch arm of Beeler.

Jay County managed a brief lead in the fourth game thanks to a pair of kills by Erin St. Myers and one by Ashley Overla on Sarah Ainsworth’s serve, but it wasn’t enough. Four straight points served by Erika Johnson gave the Squaws a 17-10 lead, and the match ended just a little later when a Beeler free ball went wide left.

Miller’s seven aces, eight blocks and six digs keyed the victory for Bellmont, along with Schamerloh’s eight kills.

“Megan Schamerloh really picked it up,” said Bailey of the senior outside hitter who endured two knee surgeries this summer. “She’s really been on fire and we need it right now.”

Stephanie Journay added seven kills and two aces for the Squaws, and Erika Hammond had six blocks. Johnson finished with 27 assists, Erin Braun had 10 digs and Wefel had six digs.

Hough had a team-best 12 kills to go along with nine digs in the final home match of her career for the Patriots. Ainsworth has 18 assists, and Beeler finished with six points.

Erin St. Myers topped the team with 10 digs and eight points to go along with eight kills.

Jay County closes the regular season at the Marion Invitational Saturday at 9 a.m. Medler said he’ll use the day to go back to some basics with the sectional tournament a week away.

“We’ve got to pass serve,” he said. “Any team that knows us knows they’re going to step back and serve it hard.”

JV/freshmen

The Patriots’ junior varsity squad fell to a 21-13, 21-9 loss to Bellmont, while the freshman team took a 21-16, 21-15 defeat.

Theresa Reinhart paced the JV team with four kills. She also had three digs.

Janae Roush finished with five digs, and Markie Runyon had three. Jamie Walker notched two kills, Erica Clark had two points and Miranda Tingley had five assists.

Carrisa Wilkens led Jay County in the freshman match with six kills, four digs and three points. Clark had six points, four on aces, and 10 assists.

Jessica Muhlenkamp matched Wilkens with six kills, and Amber Cotherman had three digs.[[In-content Ad]]
