A couple of three-game losses kept the Jay County freshman volleyball team from a winning record as it hosted the Jay County Freshman Invitational Saturday.

The Patriots lost to South Adams 21-15, 11-21, 21-19 and Southwood 21-13, 10-21, 21-14 in the matches that could have lifted them over .500 on the day and the season. Jay County (4-5) also fell to Greenfield 21-19, 21-15, and earned its lone win over the day over Marion 21-12, 21-14.

Theresa Reinhart finished in the top three in the team in both kills and points on the day with seven and 12 respectively. Mary Spencer had a team-high 11 kills, and Jessica Muhlenkamp followed Reinhart with five.

Erica Clark had 20 points, nine on aces, and Ashley Horn scored 14 points. Clark also led the team with 19 assists, followed by Horn’s six.

Amber Cotherman scored all of her nine points on aces, and Spencer added five aces. Jessica Muhlenkamp notched a pair of blocks, and Maria Miller had one block.

Stars fall in ACAC final

South Adams scored a 4-1 win over the Adams Central Jets to reach the final round of the Allen County Athletic Conference tournament. But, the Starfires lost to the Bluffton Tigers by the same score in the conference finale.

No. 3 singles player Brandon Liechty was the only player to score two wins on the day for the Starfires.

He defeated Alex Pfister of Bluffton in the finals 5-7, 6-2, 7-5. His other win came against Adams Central’s Nathan Aschliman 6-0, 6-0.

Other wins for South Adams against the Jets came from Tony VanGelder at No. 2 singles, Carson Sprunger and Thomas Masterson at No. 1 doubles and Lee Hoeppner and Brett Zurcher at No. 2 doubles.

No. 1 singles player Eric Martin earned all-conference honors while VanGelder received honorable mention. Sprunger and Masterson also earned honorable mention in doubles play.

Jay teams defeated

A couple of Jay County soccer teams lost this weekend.

The Jay County Firebirds under-14 team took a 2-1 loss against Rushville, and the Jay County Jaguars under-12 girls team suffered a 5-2 loss against New Castle.

The lone goal in the Firebirds’ defeat came from Dustin Fox. He also led the team by taking nine of its 15 shots on goal.

Brad Horn and Patrick Johnson each added two shots. Derek Bartlett came away with six saves.

Pazia Speed scored both goals for the Jaguars.

Pats upset Wes-Del

Jay County’s volleyball team picked up a big win Thursday, topping the Class A No. 8 Wes-Del Warriors 21-15, 13-21, 21-18, 7-21, 15-12.

The Patriots got a huge effort from the entire team — especially Shannon O’Dell and Julie Sours — as it won the match without top player Sara Hough.

O’Dell came through with her second double-digit kill match of the week, finishing with 12. She also had a trio of blocks.

Sours jumped back up from the junior varsity squad to replace Hough. She racked up eight kills and 10 digs.

Ashley Overla added nine digs to the offensive effort. Erin St. Myers anchored the defense with 21 points while adding nine points, and Sarah Ainsworth put up 28 assists.

Jay County’s next match is at home Tuesday against Fort Recovery at 5:30 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
