Jay freshmen take pair at Highland (01/17/05)

ANDERSON — Jay County’s freshman basketball team came away with a couple of wins Saturday, topping Anderson Highland 35-32 and Knightstown 32-26.

Coach Andy Isch, whose team is 7-4, said he thought his team learned a lot in the two games and did some growing up as it found a way to get a pair of wins.

Brandon Buckland led the Patriots in both games, scoring all of his 14 points in the second half of the win over Knightstown. He also had 11 points in the win over Highland.

Heath Rigby scored all of his 10 points in the first half against Knightstown. Luke Goetz had eight points against Highland, and Rigby added seven.

WJ seventh splits

UNION CITY — The seventh grade team managed the only win for West Jay at the Union City West Side girls basketball tournament Saturday by thumping the hosts 26-6. They also lost a tight game to Centerville 23-21.

The eighth grade team finished 0-2 with a 30-16 loss to West Side and a 25-19 loss to Centerville.

The Eagle seventh graders shut out West Side in the first and third quarters to grab their victory. Brittany Muhlenkamp paced the team with 10 points, and Keri VanSkyock added six as it improved to 6-3.

Muhlenkamp and VanSkyock also set the pace in the loss to Centerville. Muhlenkamp had eight points and 10 rebounds, and VanSkyock added five points.

Chelsea Grady was the top scorer for the eighth grade teams in both games, posting seven points in each. Jessica Piercy had five points against Centerville, and Alex Bunch scored four versus West Side.

Swimmers place 5th

YORKTOWN — The Jay County Winter Swim team finished fifth this weekend as it competed in the 12-team Robbin Lindsey Memorial Swim Meet.

Southeastern Swim Club was first, and Huntington/Wells Swim Club placed second.

Justin Klopp led Jay County as he won a pair of events and finished in the top three in all of his races in the 13-and-older boys division.

He was first in the 100-yard butterfly, nearly breaking the minute mark in 1-minute, 0.28 seconds. He also took first in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:05.08.

Sam Miller grabbed the only other individual win, also in the 13-and-older division. He was first in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:36.00, and added three more top-six finishes.

Also, Sok Vormohr, Jesse Sutton, Adams Young and Levi Hummel teamed to win the 8-and-younger 100-yard freestyle relay in 1:34.20.

Cori Vormohr and Annie Vormohr shared the top result on the girls side, each posting second-place finishes.

Annie was second in two races — the 25-yard butterfly in 19.84 and the 50-yard butterfly in 51.13. Cori took second in the 50-yard freestyle in 26.73.

They both finished in the top six in six events.

Also placing in the top six were: Hummel, Sophie Bader, Sok Vormohr and Emilee Miller.[[In-content Ad]]
